So wait, did she connect to Arisu and rewrite her memory in the end like god wanted her to? Or did she choose on her own to forget?

Probably. Or try to explain why you disliked it to foster some kind of discussion instead of letting this place became a close-minded hugbox.

I thought she was a imagined life that came from the girl that killed herself in the start of the series. So like the end was just her accepting she was dead or something.

boards got more to offer than lain.

but in regards to lain it entirely depends on your issues with it. if you thought it was boring it doesnt matter how many times you watch it you wont like it. If you wanted more, felt things were too vague, etc. then that's okay. Most people do first time watching it.

Remember the end is the beginning ~
>>4552
The first time I watched it I realised instantly how it was going to be a total head-trip, just not to the extent it would
do so... How Lain is so simply a kind hearted girl learning about life while she also occupies a transcendental self that reveals the deeper qualities of anyone she meets! Potentially Lain doesn't even exist and is a figment of our imaginations...

I felt lain was supposed to identify with some of the viewers. some of us are or were just people learning about life, and it can get really bizarre and scary when all the things we are raised to know and value start to lose that value and the world kind of falls apart.

of course I don't think it was ALL about that but I do think it was a part of lains character.

>Lain doesn't even exist

Most of the events Lain was involved in have a very urban-legend feel. The Lain in the Sky thing, the Emails from the Dead Girl, Accela, the Psyche chip, the various conspiracies (KIDS, Knights of the Eastern Calculus, that fuarrrking alien), even things like the intro (PRESENT DAY PRESENT TIME) and Lain appearing in TV static are classic urban legend ideas.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if 'Lain is an urban legend' was the intended solution to the show.

totally, I mean a head trip in the sense of motifs perhaps moreso... the eeriness of some scenes, and how it isn't grasping desperately at our perspective of 'reality' (she wanders through empty space surrounded by angels and auras) ~ the scene in the classroom where she disappears (sort of vanishes to everyone else) happened to me like I felt that exact sensation of fading before the people I know...

>>4584
I agree ~ she has a mysterious quality to her that I can't quite define.

Boogiepop Phantom.

It was made by some of the same people who worked on Lain, and shares many similar themes, namely the one about urban legends, just with less of a cyberpunk emphasis and done in a vignette style. Just do not expect it to be another Lain, because then you might be disappointed. It is still its own distinct series.

I have watched it a few times this year, 12 years after I first saw it on TechTV. Bits and pieces only became more disturbing with age to me, especially the more existential scares, like the dating-simulator-addict in Episode 4 "My Fair Lady".

Just like Lain, the series also contains a great deal of social comentary on contemporary Japanese society. I find the dub to be really enjoyable as well.

Oh also, binge-watching Lain is probably a bad idea. If you can do that and still enjoy it go ahead, but I find that I lose my attention span on any series after an hour.

TechTV really had the right idea back in 2002, I think. I seem to recall they would air two episodes back-to-back at about midnight Eastern Time.

At such a late hour, people are less likely to question what they are watching, and instead just take it in. It also synced well with hours at which people focus. I would watch it in that sort of late-night trance state, go to sleep, and then the next day it would all make sense and the images would stick with me.

Maybe there is something about watching before sleep that allows it to be more firmly planted into the subconscious, which is where I think Lain belongs.
