 No.4197

Let's list/talk about some obscure shows that we watched, got any obscure favs? So far I've seen
>Amazing Nuts
>Dead Leaves
>Otaku no Video
>Haibane Renmei
>Eve no Jikan
>Perfect Blue
>Jin-Rou
Personally I loved Eve no Jikan and Dead Leaves. Eve no Jikan is slow paced and it can even be considered a slife of life anime while Dead Leaves is over the top pantsu on head retarded (kind of like a flcl but in a good way) with amazing art style

Not the poster above, but yes it's good. I'd also like to draw some special attention to its soundtrack, by plaid; It's simply divine.

Not the poster either, but yes Tekkonkinkreet is great. I advise you to check out everything Taiyo Matsumoto (the tekkonkinkreet mangaka) has touched.

Oh thanks, I see that a lot of his work looks obscure/experimental

I liked Alien 9 and Narutaru. They have a weird feeling to it, like something would be quite off with these works.

Maybe I'm just a sadistic asshole, who enjoys watching little girls cry, but the manga it was adapted from were to my liking as well. Hands down to Hitoshi Tomizawa and Mohiro Kitoh!

>>

 No.4220

How did you like Kanamemo?
I liked it a lot, because it is a SoL show that doesn't mind going full yuri.

>>

 No.4221

I liked "Reqium from the Darkness", it has an interesting artstyle and forlorn story.

"Mushishi" is so chill, I enjoy how it takes on the tone of the Mushishi beings that are neither good nor bad, they just are. Wouldn't call it obscure, but if "Haibane Renmei" is here then it might as well be too.

Another show I watched semi-recently was "Rin - Daughters of Mnsyne".
It has some neat /cyb/ aesthetics (in the later episodes) and a cool take on immortality, but it has Eroguro overtones so it's not for everyone (it's only 6 episodes).

Wings of Honneamise/Royal Space Force
Not really a show, it's a full animated film, but it's pretty damn unknown.
Has an incredible built alternate world, realistic space exploration and great visuals. Yet I don't see it often around. It's not even in that list, I think.

Talking about series instead I've just started watching Birdy the Mighty. Just a couple of episode ins, it's pretty good but too early to give a full judgement

>>4206
this looks pretty cool, might watch it

No idea if they are obscure or not, but I don't see them too often on any chan.

>Mushishi

Very cool, very cool and very comfy show
>Aku no Hana
Annoying protagonist until the very few last minute of the las episode, your typical angsty teenager who think he is exceptional because he read some Baudelaire, but otherwise the art style, music, sound effect are really, really good.
>Gyagu Manga Byori
I would heartily recommend this one, but it might be difficult to find a torrent for it, season of japanese fun.
>Ergo Proxy
Pino I fuarrrking love her. Cyberpunky story. Great animation.
>Hen Zemi
Litteraly Hentai Seminar or seminar for deviant. Imagine that you are in Japan and took the Deviant option in University, well just go watch the show. The vulgar humor might be off-putting for some person.
>House of the five leaves
Very shy ronin in Japan.
>Samourai Flamenco
A japanese top model whose child dream is to be a super hero.
>Ping pong the Animation
It's a manga adaptation of Taiyō Matsumoto like >>4198 it's about Ping Pong, and like tekkonkinkrete it's amazing. The manga and the anime.
>Hozuki no Reitetsu
Comedy about Japanese Hell and their demonic dwellers.
>Mononoke
The story of an humble apothecary hunting demon. The most beautiful and strange anime I've ever seen, from my opinion.
>Tatami Galaxy
Love story and multiverse in a 4.5 tatami mat apartment.

>>4248
An other good show about space exploration is Planetes.

>>

 No.4254

>>4253
Almost forgot
>Koi Kaze
The forbidden love between a big brother and his 13 years younger little sister. I think that is pretty obscure.
>Kaiba
sci-fi, made in 2008, but look like it was made in late 80s.

>>

 No.4256

>>4253
I've seen Ergo Proxy and Tatami Galaxy I wasn't too sure if they were obscure enough that's why I didn't include them in the OP. That being said, I started watching Mononoke, I'm on ep 2 and judging by the art style and the storyline I'm going to quite enjoy this series. Also I just finished "Mind Game", would recommend/10. The last 20 minutes of the animu gave me chills, it's quite motivational.

Anyone here seen Red Garden? It's a horror-drama anime that takes place in America. It's one of my favorites.

Also there's Betterman, a show that doesn't hardly ever get talked about, but it's very good. It's a mecha/monster horror-themed show with lots of science in it. I highly recommend it.

Also there is Iria: The Zeiram Animation which is a 6 episode OVA based on a Japanese live-action scifi monster movie.

>Aku no hana
I think that the characters weren't really likable but interesting. Or at least their interactions where. Most people hate the animation but it's part of what makes it so good. It gives it a weird eerie feeling as well as makes it less anime and more of a drama. It's probably in my top 3 favorite anime. The manga just isn't as good cause there's no atmosphere and not so good delivery. The only good part is the plot.

It's not very good but I like the anime Tactics. It's shoujo and kinda yaoi bait art style but I learned a lot of lore from it growing up. It's about a priest and a tengu solving supernatural problems in old japan. I've never heard it talked about. It's not exactly great though.

Rin Daugters of Mnemosyne was pretty dumb, but it had some surprisingly interesting ideas that you wouldn't see coming from what seems from the episode to be essentially edgy tortureporn.

I'm currently watching Gasaraki, on one hand the most realistic and serious mecha anime I've seen, and on the other hand it has mysticism up the ass with noh dances and ancient gods and whatnot.

I'm not sure how obscure it is considering K-on references it a few times, but Detroit Metal City is absolutely hilarious. I even like the music.

Kaiba, and most things Masaaki Yuasa worked on, has great style and an interesting plot.

Haibane Renmei should be well known on this board considering ABe worked on it. Go watch it. Ghost Hound had the same director if I remember correctly, so get on that as well.

Shinsekai Yori gets a lot of hate and nobody has managed to properly explain to me why. I personally loved the world and most elements of the story, and while the animation isn't the best and it has some problems at times it's certainly not below average for TV anime, especially considering it also has an interesting art style and unique directing. It's decently subtle on some fronts, and definitely worth a rewatch if only to see Squealer in a different light. People cite "pacing" as its main issue, but don't explain what they mean in this context. I, for one, was engaged the entire time, both while it was airing and about a year later during my rewatch.

A friend of mine recommended Boogiepop Phantom to me a few days ago and I really liked it. As close to Lain as it was I'm surprised I hadn't heard of it beforehand. I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it already. Also gonna agree with OP on Eve no Jikan; that one was really good. I should probably watch Haibane Renmei or Ghost Hound next.
