So I have a huge list of weeb soykaf thanks to you guys.
Now we need to cut it down to a more reasonable size and remove all the soykaf from it.

Since it's so long I've decided we will go a section or two at a time; so for now we will focus on the anime.

http://pastebin.com/NEwAXbS7

There's about 88 entries in the list, we should probably cut it down to 45 or less, especially considering that some of these entries count as multiple anime series.
So basically:

Tl;Dr: Submit corrections and what you think should be removed (and why).
We can argue if said thing should actually be removed.

Pic very related

Is it just me or has the fandom changed completely since the 80s/early 90s. It seems like these days there is an influx of delusional obsessives who swear that Japanese culture = anime (which is like saying superhero comics = Typical life in the USA). These same people act in such an way that is entirely the opposite of what collectivistic societies like Japan would find tolerable. I think earlier fans (many of whom were fan translators out of necessity due to botched and edited releases coming our way if at all during that time) had more of an appreciation for the difference between cartoons and real life. Some would use the more alien features of a show as an opportunity to explain and discuss things such as state shintoism, historic eras, folklore and the like. The medium became more of a bridge to pique interest in a society much different from what westerners may be familiar with. It seems like that curiosity you used to find in small conventions, usenet and web 1.0 has been replaced by those weebs who sperg out over the new moe craze and dream about living in the land of the rising sun without hazarding to learn anything about it.

TL;DR
The current fandom makes me hesitant to openly admit to enjoying this hobby

I have always thought the same thing since /b/ helped crush my Wapanese delusion over ten years ago.

My brother recently visited from Hawaii and tried to tell me there was nothing wrong with calling oneself an otaku. My response was something like "Bro, did you FORGET? Did you forget all those years of our /b/ conditioning? Did you forget that annoying girl at the mall who kept trying to speak broken Japanese to you back in 2004?"

I might watch a lot of anime now that I got back into it, but i will never be Fred Gallagher level of Wapanese again and definitely never call myself an otaku. I am an American, and in America we have a word for that phenomenon: NERD.

how many of those weebs realize that "otaku" means home (as in your home), not fan. When joined with a topic is used as a strong pejorative for someone who has nothing better to do than stay at home and do x.
These weebs are completely naiive, yet are convinced they contain a vast knowledge of everything Japanese. In reality they are part of a sad cult-like subculture within the fandom that really only has a knowledge of the little subculture and its absurdities.

Boogiepop Phantom.

It was made by some of the same people who worked on Lain, and shares many similar themes, namely the one about urban legends, just with less of a cyberpunk emphasis and done in a vignette style. Just do not expect it to be another Lain, because then you might be disappointed. It is still its own distinct series.

I have watched it a few times this year, 12 years after I first saw it on TechTV. Bits and pieces only became more disturbing with age to me, especially the more existential scares, like the dating-simulator-addict in Episode 4 "My Fair Lady".

Just like Lain, the series also contains a great deal of social comentary on contemporary Japanese society. I find the dub to be really enjoyable as well.

Oh also, binge-watching Lain is probably a bad idea. If you can do that and still enjoy it go ahead, but I find that I lose my attention span on any series after an hour.

TechTV really had the right idea back in 2002, I think. I seem to recall they would air two episodes back-to-back at about midnight Eastern Time.

At such a late hour, people are less likely to question what they are watching, and instead just take it in. It also synced well with hours at which people focus. I would watch it in that sort of late-night trance state, go to sleep, and then the next day it would all make sense and the images would stick with me.

Maybe there is something about watching before sleep that allows it to be more firmly planted into the subconscious, which is where I think Lain belongs.

Alright Lains, /w/ is visible again but we need to make some activity, so it's time to post your waifu. You can post Lain, but that's pretty generic. We all love Lain here Optional but encouraged: why is she (he??) your waifu?

I'll start us off. Now, I'm not the kind of guy to ONLY HAVE ONE WAIFU FOR ETERNITY AND FOREVER, but I really like R. Dorothy Wayneright. She might be an android, but I like to think she can feel emotion (it's even hinted at in the series). I guess I kind of have a soft-spot for kuudere girls in general, but Dorothy is special to me.

My husband is affectionate, cuddly, has an impressive job for his age, and is very cute. Being able to talk to animals is a nice bonus.
