It's stupid. Someone bored enough to add a keyboard shortucut that starts a terminal with an update script "preloaded" to i3 might just as well add a one letter-long alias that runs "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" to his bashrc and then have faster results than what i3 does.

OP here, if that is your reasoning someone could just add a cron job to run updates automatically each day with the -y flag.

But otherwise a nice idea.

>What I measured was the total time of how many seconds did the user have to interact(user actions) with his computer to complete the desired goal while using the GUI or the CLI. In other words I am not measuring the speed of the software but the speed of the usage of said software.
This reminds me of how huffman-encoding can be used to create a more optimal keyboard layout that results in less key presses, but no human being would be able to feasibly use it.

I don't reason about user interfaces in terms of efficiency, but what features they provide. Emacs using X has many advantages over Emacs using ncurses, such as resizable text and image viewing.

I am interested, I wanna hear more about the huffman encoding issue.

There wouldn't be any human interaction anymore and the point of the experiment was to measure the duration of human interaction for a given task. Unless you fully optimize every possible interaction the human could have with his computer, it is stupid to compare a half-optimized (i.e. something partially automated by the user) way with the non optimized ways.

You would wind up with keys for sequences like ae and ie.
Let's say some letters, like x, are only followed by certain letters. With this, you would get keys that have xa and xu, but no x just by itself.
Basically, you would have a keyboard that is more efficient, but not human usable.

It would need more keys than there are letters, and would work only for one language.

Why would this be human unusable? The japanese seem to not suffer when they have to think about syllabes.

Yes.
You can't properly weigh the letters without choosing a single language.

>>14410
I think it would be human unusable. You are free to try using something like this if you really want to.

More keys would also mean more travel between the keys you want to press. While you'd reduce the number of key strokes you wouldn't necessarily improve typing speed.
And while we're talking about keyboards, here's a nice video that I discovered a while ago : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpv-Qb-dB6g

- Alt+T to launch terminal emulator
- Type in "aptup" which is an alias for "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade"
- Alt + * to switch to another workspace to shitpost while while apt-get does it's thing

Took me a whole 2 seconds. :)

You could also just setup a cron job or systemd timer.

What would be nice is a WM like XFCE or MATE with a good tiling script. i3 is amazing for terminals, but is a disaster with tiling GUI programs if you don't have a high res screen so I end up keeping GUI programs like Firefox or GIMP in their own workspace which kind of defeats the purpose.

>The CLI on the other hand is a lot like 'casting spells' you have to learn the commands and tell them to the computer.

TL;DR I'm a wizard.
