Is the new Skylake XPS13 the best laptop on the market right now?

Will the Skylake Macbook Pro find a way to beat it, or will Apple continue to be a meme machine?

Thoughts?

I don't if Dell has some new engineers or new upper management but they are really doing fuarrrking amazing lately. I would wait on Apple for a couple years since they are in the middle of releasing new design ideas (New MacBook) and haven't fully developed them into anything great.

You gotta admit, that XPS infinity screen is pretty sweet.

I wonder if it's too late for Apple to introduce one on their 2016 models.

Sadly, I believe Thinkpads are getting left behind.

Lenovo is suppose to be releasing a retro line of Thinkpads in the future cause of le memepad being popular. If you have time to wait you could see what happens in 2016 with that.

Lenovo has run Thinkpads into the ground. I'm sad that it's happened too.

I'm trying to decide on a new laptop. I started off between T450s, XPS13, Macbook Pro, and a few others. Now it's just down to the XPS and the MBP.

Do you mean best for the money or just best in general or what? I'm not to interested in getting a new laptop anytime soon, but I will probably have some money coming in and it couldn't hurt for me to invest in something.

Best in general, specifically for lighter-weight portable power.

I currently own an older Alienware M17x. I freaking love it, but it's not exactly portable.

If you had to pick a laptop to run VM's and code with, what would it be?

I wonder what you guys mean when you say that Lenovo's thinkpads are soykaf . I am currently using a x250 and that's the best machine I've ever had the joy to use (I've never had the chance to try the old thinkpads, though). The trackpad is better than a MacBook's pro (because you can click using the bottom of the bad as you would on a Macbook's OR use the buttons at the top which means you don't even have to move your hands off the home row), the 9-cell battery lasts longer than both the Macbook's and the XPS13's and it's also pretty light (though probably not as much as a macbook air).
Linux compatibility is pretty good too, I didn't have a single problem installing debian on my machine.

If you think lenovo's thinkpads are worse than IBM's, fine, but I still think that they're among the best laptops you could get.

I don't think Thinkpads are trash. The lack of screen quality, SSD, and a few other things leads me to ignore the X250. I could always put in my own SSD, but I'm a lazy bum. The only thing I like about Thinkpads are the roll cages and ability to easily upgrade the RAM.

Thinkpads tend to be loved by the community, and Apple is pretty hated. Unfortunately, programmers love Apple products. My next job might be as a code monkey at an Apple-obsessed place. If so, I'd like to be armed for battle on the first day.

I don't understand what you mean, my x250 has a 1920x1080px screen (actually, I wish I had choosen a lower resolution) and a 128GB SSD.

NOT ANY laptop is valuable right now in the market.
Every laptops are shitty, break very easely and are totaly backdoored everywhere.
Moreover, it's totaly overpriced comparing to the real market price.
Apple, it's like the devil of the market. You take every things that i've just said, and you multiplie it by 100.

Buying a macbook is asuming openly to be totaly retard. The only thing (if it's a thing) is that apple have a good social notoriety. If you want to enhance your social "experience", be more in the stream, so mac is the best one. But I don't know if it's really good to be a part of this stream. Anyway, it's the only thinks why people prefer these laptop. Because they feel smart. Even if the best russian hacker hack on shitty old computer.
If you really want to be cost effect, and you think that social notoriety have nothing to do with consumption and what you buy, that you can be an entire person without having applefag shit, so just buy an old thinkpad like t420/x220. It's perfect for work.
If you want to play, don't buy a laptop. It's just totaly overpriced comparing to the real cost of the soykaf .

If you don't want to listen to me, just assume so. Don't find over argument which are totaly counter-productive. You prefer something "beautiful" (it's totaly hideous for me but whatever) and be in the mainstream, so just assume it.

(cf picture for real smart people, and they use computer that are even older than old thinkpad)

Whoa there, while I agree that laptops are soykaf in a world of tiny desktops and big tablets but people only buying Apple soykaf for social status? Do you just associate with some fuarrrking trailer trash or something?

Apple's tablets for example are still better than most Android and Windows tablets overall and not to mention the Mac is the only BSD that has the kind of software support that many people, normie or not, might need.

This just reeks of the same social status garage you were ranting about.

You can't work on tablet. So I don't even know why you talk about tablet. Tablet is the worste tech i've ever seen. I thook when the first tablets were out that it's just gonna crash, because who the fuarrrk could buy this shitty things... I just forget that I live in a shitty humanity that just listen to ads and don't think.
Moreover, yes, Apple is just stealing the best idea of BSD and portage from gentoo. It's simple stealing. And they make you pay 1000 bucks more for stealing the hard work of volunteers.

Finally, yes, apple is just all about marketing and image of themself. It's totaly a possession which have strong social implication. Because that objectively doesn't make any sense to buy on of these things.
If you really want, I can handle your hand and we're gonna compare each price of apple product to the concurrence/not even mentionning of the real cost of the item.
Just look at the part of income apple gives to its marketing department. It's monstruous.
Price is not set considering the cost to produce an object; the price is set considering how much YOU gonna buy it.

I totally agree with this. I have used a lot of ThinkPads and, although I would agree that quality dropped from the XX00 series onward, they are still amazing laptops. I use an X250 as a daily driver as well, my last daily was a X230 and before that was a X220, then an X200, and even before that I had an X60. Lenovo has made a lot of controversial changes in the last few years, changing the keyboard with the XX30 series, then the trackpad with the XX40 series, which pissed a lot of people off, but to be perfectly honest, I really like the new keyboard. It is still much better than just about every other laptop keyboard on the market, and I feel like in some ways, it feels better than some of the older keyboards (although I do miss the old layout.) And, you can tell that the ThinkPad department of Lenovo actually listens. They heard us about the shitty trackpad on the XX40 series, and fixed it in the XX50 series. They heard us about missing the old design, and they are now working on a "retro thinkpad project."

Also, I was an owner of the Dell XPS 13 for a while, and although it does have really nice specs and performance for the price, it feels really flimsy, it gets hot, and the GNU/Linux drivers where abysmal.

Clearly, you've never actually USED a tablet. iOS, Android, and Windows all have software like MS Office or some other similar software. So while it might not be like the desktop/laptop experience, but you could do a lot of things on a tablet.

I brought up tablets because the main reason why I dislike laptops that that they aren't that portable and for someone like me who mostly just reads comics, posts on some chans, online banking, etc, a tablet with a proper desktop to do anything my tablet can't do seemed like a better option than a laptop that's a terrible desktop and an even worse tablet. You on the other hand just started talking about how all laptops are crap and backdoored and then immediately start ranting about Apple.

>I just forget that I live in a shitty humanity that just listen to ads and don't think.

Bro, turn down that edge. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean everyone else who does is some drone. This is the problem with making assumptions about everything. It makes you look bad. Unless English is not your first language and you meant something else instead of assume, in which case, sorry and could you explain what you mean.

>rants about marketing

If that's the case, then Apple is a massive failure because almost no one owns a Mac, Android phones and tablets dominate iDevices due to their lower price. Maybe then, with that considered, a person might choose an Apple product because there is a feature that other products don't?

Like I said, if you want software support but don't want to use Windows, then you kinda have to get a Mac. What if you want a tablet that has tons of apps you use designed for tablets and aren't blown up phone apps? Then you kinda need an iPad.

For a typical comsumer, even people who post on here, specs don't mean anything if it lacks the needed software or features. And if you are going to argue that the actual cost of the item is going to be lower than what you buy it for at the store, well, duh, everything, especially in tech gets marked up to hell and back. I think the first Nintendo Wii was actually extremely cheap to produce and yet it had a price tag of 250 bucks at launch.

And then back to the status symbol stuff, how is it any different from all the people who buy into Samsung phones and pretty much act like the Apple idiots you complain about? But then again, I don't care about status. I only care about the features/software and the actual hardware itself. Sometimes, Apple makes something really good, othertimes, it's HP or Motorola.

Sorry bro, but it just seems like you aren't that different from legit Apple sheep in that you are getting emotional (or it seems that way) over a brand and are making these sweeping generalizations of those who might own something of that brand.

I'm not a huge fan of lighterweight laptops, I'd rather have a heavier, thick laptop with keys that have better feeling to them, to be honest.

Also don't really see the point in putting an SSD in it, I mean aren't we just talking about faster read/writes and boot speeds. Is it really that necessary when you're talking an extra 100$ or so?

And with the last money just buy fancy watch.

As great as the T420 is, it is not amazing and it is definitely not the end-all be-all laptop that people make it out to be. First off, the screen is terrible, even the 1600x900 screen, which is pretty hard to find lacks good color saturation, also, the speakers on the T420 leave a lot to be desired, and I understand that most of the time people will use headphones with their laptop, but they are really very quiet and very muddled, they are unusable even if you don't want to use them very much. Everyone puts a $200 pricetag on them, but for that price it is very hard to find them in good condition with all the parts you need. I consider myself very lucky that I was able to get a T420 with a 120GB SSD for $150 in moderate condition.

Also, you mentioned getting a new battery. There is not way you can get a genuine Lenovo battery for $30, and I cannot stress enough that you should not get a Chinese battery. They rarely last a year, and don't keep their expected charge capacity longer than a week or so, if they ship with it. Lenovo batteries can run you up to $75 if you want the 9cell.

>The t420 have a quad core

Very few T420s have real quad cores. More likely than not, it is a dual core with hyper threading.

There are a tone of seller which selled t420 down here. And the ones I saw, t420 and not t420s, have quadcore. So I think that it depends where you leave... You have to take care. But it's the best machine I've ever touch. Even comparing to high brand laptop like asus rog one (comparing to the price ofc).
Moreover, I wanted to buy one chinese battery... What's wrong? The computer itself coms from china. The original battery too.

Actually, an SSD in a laptop makes sense. SSDs consume less electricity than HDDs, fare better when moved around (or in case of a fall) and having faster reads/writes is nice when you want to put your laptop in hibernation (though I'll agree that depending on how much you make your laptop hibernate it could reduce your SSD's lifespan).
