Is the 1st edition of TCP/IP Illustrated worth reading? I know it's outdated, but is it outdated in the sense of being obsolete as or not covering more recent developments? Reviewers on Amazon say the 2nd edition, while not bad, is far less readable - which is important since I don't want to read gigantic walls of text especially about a technical subject matter.

Depends on what you're going for. If you're going for general knowledge or to simply know more about computing: read EVERYTHING. If you're looking for specific knowledge of TCP/IP? Read it. Otherwise, I'd skip.

I'm learning Python right but I also want to learn everything about how the internet works. Is TCP/IP Illustrated a good starting point for that? I don't really want to read something poorly written or jargon laden .

If you want to learn how the internet works start with the basics you can find anywhere online.

Ask these questions:
What is a packet?
What is contained in the packet?
How is the packet made?
How is a packet moved around a LAN?
How does a network device discover other devices within the LAN?
How is a packet routed over the internet?

Once you understand how that works then start looking into protocols and how the are made and work in the real world.

I hope these questions give you an idea on what to look for.

I haven't read TCP/IP illustrated, so I can't say to read it or not. But I have a lot of networking knowledge, so hopefully these questions will give you a good start on where to look.
