Hello lainons! Let's discuss HDDs.

What HDDs are you using?
Which HDDs are currently the best ones? (I personally never had luck with WDs while Seagates always worked well for me, but I heard that Seagate's build quality gone downhill.)

I've been using a lot of Sandisk SSD's

I've already seen that picture, but some people argue it's fake.

I have a lot of seagates, but with recent performance I wish I didn't (they are really cheap though).

I stand by WD for the most part. They tend to be quality even if they are more expensive by comparison.

However always pick non-name brand when possible. Don't let the big names gobble up all the money because inevitably they will start to soykaf up the quality of their product.

i have heard good things about Samsung SSDs from a guy who built an SDD raid recently for keks

actually i think most discs of most manufacturers are ok, but you can always get unlucky and purchase a bad batch

you know, since they are constructed in batches

you can avoid that by deliberately not buying your discs (SSD or not) at the same time from the same company

other than that just be prepared for failing discs, always.

I've had two seagate hdds give me catastrophic failures in the past two years. My WD raids are still going strong without a single fault. Either way the brand means very little. Most undergo similar stress and enviornmental tests. When you purchase hdds and ssds just make your purchases incrementally to avoid buying similar batches as insurance against similar defects.

I also asked my friend for advice and he told me that if I were to buy a 1TB drive, it's best to buy an one-platter one; the damage rates are probably lower and it makes sense.
I'll probably buy WD10EZEX 'cause it's somewhat cheap in my country.

I think there should be single-platter drives bigger than 1TB by now.

Samsung Evo 500 GB, Toshiba 128GB, and Plextor 128GB SSDs here.

Also some external Seagate 4tb usb 3.0 storage drives. These are honestly shitty, totally slow, but cheap for the space.

In fact, I don't know of any good usb 3.0 external drive enclosures. It seems they all have flaws. Has anyone had any good experiences with external enclosures?

currently in use for a year now: Samsung EVO 250 GB, 2x WD Red 1 TB. Satisfied with them.
I've got two 7 or 8 year old drives, one Hitachi, the other I don't remember. They never failed me.
I'd recommend WD Reds. Stay away from greens or research them beforehand. NO experience with blues.

Do you guys have an opinion about 15kRPM drives? I bought one years ago and this machine still runs on it. Loud as fuarrrk but faster than HD and cheaper than SSD. Is the price/speed ratio worth it for RAID or something if you don't mind the noise?

>>13669
interesting, i didnt know that

I use Toshiba HDDs. They're as cheap as Seagates (when on sale) and have around the same failure rates as Western Digital. >>13660

Screw Samsung SSDs. Firmware bugs galore. They're also a shitty company in general. Sandisk and Crucial are pretty good when it comes to SSDs.
