Yes. I've got distant family that I like to keep in contact with, they're spread across a half-dozen time zones, and I've got a full-time job where I can't make personal calls on company landlines. If I didn't carry a mobile, I'd never be able to talk to half my family.

idk man, drug dealers use them all the time. I'd be more cautious about what kind of messages you send with WhatsApp. Nothing beats a f2f conversation though.

My cellphone has a nice home, I think. It tends to sit peacfully in my suitcase, in my closet. It gets great battery life, as the cell sits beside it most of the time and I only power it one once a week or so.

I live on nearly the other side of the planet from my family. My parents live in different time zones from eachother. I live in Europe and I have friends on both coasts of the US and in the middle as well. I would not let a cellphone interrupt me to talk to these people. I arrange times to talk when it is convenient for us both, or I use email.

Heer Heer! I prefer that a thousand times to the digital means that I use, but, alas, I cannot afford to fly across the planet and back every week to talk to friends. I can afford to keep a laptop running and that is what I do.

Yep, this person knows. Even if you have a dumbphone, the carrier knows which towers that handset is connecting to and when.

Just a guess, but you would probably need to be really diligent and disciplined with using fresh pre-paid SIMs to make it hard (costly) to tie an identity to the data.

What is fun though is that some people are able to set up basically their own cell phone network.

I broke my phone months ago and found i enjoyed not having to carry it around and look after it. So much in fact that don´t think i wiĺl bother with a new one smart or dumb.

GCHQ can now legaly hack into ANY phone and turn on mic/video, look at contacts and history.

Only way to keep some contact and privacy... Get a pager, keep phone in Faraday wallet. If people want to contact you they have to page you (no location info given away - pagers are dumb and don't give off any info) then if you want to respond, goto loacation you are happy with then use your phone to call them. As soon as done phone back in wallet. - get a stack of PAYG sim cards - pay cash only and keep them unused for a few months first so any CCTV will be long gone.

Also buy DUMB phone second hand (cash) from someone you won't know or see again (market stall maybe) again wait few months before you use it.

This if played right might be able to fuarrrk up any tracking from Big Brother - but they could still link who your contacts if not know who you are. Depending on your use they still might be able to join the dots from your contacts and guess who or what you are!

1) won't have to boot - and hence do the boot broadcast dance. - i.e. they cant specificity tell your turning on/off which would ring bells in apps designed to monitor burner phones and the like! GCHQ looks for such activity as phones only on for a few min here and there.
Dead signal probably is less obvious.
