 No.13562

I haven't used linux in a several years and after finding Lainchan and lurking for awhile you guys gave me the bug again so I decided to buy a thinkpad see what's changed.

I got the t430 for about $230 off of ebay. i5, 4gb ram 320gb hdd Almost pristine condition, the only noticeable things is a blemish just below the lenovo logo but aside from that it was much better than I expected. boots up fine and everything seems to work.

Currently downloading fedora 23. I ordered some flash drives and a few books off of Amazon but that won't get here until a bit later. Unfortunately, I have night school so I'm not gonna mess with it until I get back around 11.

You should try antergos instead of fedora. It's an arch based distro. Also nice t430 hope you have the extended battery

It is done.

I got back from school and found my usb drive's waiting so I went to work. Installation was easy as expected. I'm using Gnome 3 again after a very long time and I now begin to remember my hatred for it. The workspaces, the unintuitiveness, functionality replaced in the name of minimalism.

The software manager already crashed once and there is no real package manager installed like I remember.

Nice to know font rendering is still complete garbage even in 2015. I like to think that as a grown man I know what I want and do not and Gnome is definitely the latter. I'm not wasting my time with this DE.

Time to go with KDE.

When I used linux I was not much of an expert. I can get things working and know roughly my way around it but I like to stick with big distro's in the name of being able to google problems.

The laptop is pretty cool. I already want to upgrade ram and replace the cd drive with a hard drive. What i'll probably end up doing is putting an SSD in the main drive slot and keeping the HDD as storage.

ANd yes, it came with a 9 cell.

>>13571
W-what do you mean?

>>13572
For $200 I could've done a LOT worse. As above, I'm not a connoisseur of linux or anything. I was just a lonely teen who had /g/ as one of his few outlets which is why I started playing around with this. I had to get a job and I've been working blue collar for several years now.

The plan is to really get to know linux this time around a little bit in depth. I'm also aiming to learn a little bit about networking and electronics. Nothing major but I like being a sort of jack of all trades.

in terms of being able to google problems, antergos would be BETTER cause it has the arch wiki behind it and that arch community.

But I understand if you are wary of changing distros

Arch was my first distro and I can confirm this. There is so much documentation and the Arch wiki is amazing for solving problems and getting things to work.

Sorry to hijack the thread a little but I just got hold of a laptop myself. Normally I'd go with gentoo but it's an old laptop so I want something with binary packages. I've installed Arch for now but I'd rather avoid systemd. Anyone have suggestions for a distro?

Makes sense. How well does arch play with KDE? Is there a distro that comes with KDE as the default? I don't feel like dealing with packages too much.

>>13673
What's the deal with systemd? Why does everyone seem to hate it?

I reckon OpenSUSE has KDE by default.

However, you shouldn't pick distros based on their default DE, but on how comfortable you feel with them and the package manager is a huge factor. So I'd suggest you familiarize with the package manager from the get go. Look for a GUI for it if you don't feel comfortable on the command line.

KDE (both 4 and 5) run very well on arch, and the packages offer a very 'stock' experience.

In typical arch fashion you will need to do certain things for yourself like setting up the display manager for a login screen, worrying about if you're using network manager, worrying about if you're using pulse audio, etc.

OpenSUSE is probably the KDE-specific distro with the most history if you want to go that route. There's also Kubuntu and the Fedora KDE spin, but at least to me KDE has always felt like a second-class citizen on those distros...

There's Netrunner rolling, which is an Arch based distro that comes with a nice set of preinstalled programs and a tricked out KDE setup.

So why? Too long compile times? I use Gentoo on my K6 machines and i'am a busy man..

If you don't mind a Debian base you could give Q4OS a try. The DE is Trinity, which is basically an older version of KDE. Personally, I prefer older KDE over new KDE. The look and feel of Q4OS is similar to how Windows was at its peak (Win 98 - 2000). Not everyone's cup of tea I'm sure, but I love it.

That was the idea, though now that I've had a chance to use it it doesn't seem to be that slow. Gentoo it is.

whenever I install arch if I try and set up the network it just fuarrrks everything up and ends up not working. like it just seems so much nicer to use wifi-menu especially on a laptop when im probably on different networks anyways each time i boot it up.
