I think the fact that the Truecrypt team actually said you should not use it is a bit of wink wink nudge nudge. In it's current state it's fine for hiding porn from your family and friends, but don't use it if your goal is to protect yourself from the government.

I live in a five eyes nation. I'd rather have the Russians or Chinese spying on me than the US, because the very worst the Russians or Chinese can do is ruin me financially. My own government can do far, far worse things to me.

to be clear, it doesn't affect encryption at all. If you are running a malicious programme, that programme is able to elevate its privilleges, so it's very serious. But it doesn't concern encrypted unmounted drive.
