your alt-tab tip only really speeds things up... it is a cool way of navigating though, i'm well aware!

Got the old laptop/terminal onto Win10 ~ you're right, it's much less exploitable.

>>13338 this chummer means jumping between windows as an alternative from clicking tabs up top, i'm fairly sure.

the secret is TUI & CLI applications. there's only one gtk program in the screens, being luakit, which is completely riceable like all minimal gtk browsers. gui vs tui always makes a huge difference. compare the first scrot, transmission vs thunar vs midnight commander. And then there's the second one... i love TUIs and it more or less discovered accidently that they *also* make for a very consistent overall appearance.

what programs are those? I need to switch over some more lightweight programs like file manager and music player to not use so much ram on this old thinkpad

not all in the screenshots, but here's a selection of programs i use..
file manager: midnight commander (mc)
music player: music on console (moc or mocp, depending on distro)
email: mutt
RSS: newsbeuter
multiplexer: tmux
terminal: st (suckless' simple terminal; from source)
WM: dwm (suckless too; from source)
irc: irssi
video player: mplayer without a gui

Do you organize your images? If so, what do you use for that task? For example, using mc + feh would be a real pain. I currently use urxvt + ranger, but I want to move to st.

You'd be more consistent if you used rtorrent; that GUI out of nowhere is very jarring.

I have a huge collection and I just use folders with ranger+sxiv. Sometimes I hardlink pictures to be in more than one folder too. If you're using feh, definitely check out sxiv. It's much better.

I do. I organize them hierarchically through folders, like >>13640
I didn't enjoy using feh in dwm, because it doesn't tile well. Currently i'm using viewnior for viewing images, since it's minimal gui tiles like a proper window. I briefly tried feh with mc and opened images through the mc command line with "feh *", ie told feh to open all of them, or - in the rare case i want a specific image - "feh ctrl+enter", which copies the marked file's name into the command line. it was underwhelming indeed. hence i returned to viewnior, which fullfills my needs just fine.
