So, the Raspberry guys stripped their old board, applied some software tweaks to run at 1GHz and put a 5$ price tag on their device.

Meanwhile, the 9$ CHIP is on its way with a tablet CPU clocked at 1GHz with wifi and bluetooth on board, and (planned) mainline linux kernel and opensource everything.

Making your own smartphone or raspberry pi

Hey, i posted this on 8chan and i was curious about your opinions on the subject. I was wondering if you could build your own smartphone or your own raspberry pi board just by buying an arm processor, some ram and a touchscreen. The motherboard would be made like this :

The final result would be essentially a mini laptop who has a phone call and text message function that you could de-activate in order to dodge GPS/GSM tracking. It would also be used as a device for pentesting in public without looking suspicious.

I want to improve the quality of the thousands of dank memes and wallpaper I've collected over the years. There are reverse image search engines out there like Google, Bing, Yandex, and TinEye. With TinEye for example you upload an image or provide a link and it gives you a bunch of similar pictures that can be sorted by best match, biggest size, etc.

Resources for learning. I came across a huge library. How can i be sure it's safe?

Sounds ridiculous, but having a look at it, there is a huge fuarrrking wealth of knowledge in there. It seems like it would be amazing to add to a collection.

However, I'm hesitant to download anything unless i know it to be safe. I did some searching about the collection, and i found a few people complaining about viruses, others arguing that it doesn't have any viruses, etc, etc. Some of these people might be being truthful, or they could be trolling, who knows.

I'm running Linux which makes it less likely to get viruses, but it definitely isn't virus proof. iirc, there was some recent ransom type of virus that went around encrypting people's soykaf and demanding bitcoin in exchange the key to decrypt your stuff.

This kind of thing seems too good to be true, although I've seen many say good things about it.

Anyone here have experience with it? Seems like a goldmine for learning material, although again, I'm not so sure if i can trust the source.

What are your thoughts?

OpenBSD thread

This is a thread to discuss OpenBSD and ask questions.

I'm actually having a very peculiar issue. I've been meaning to upgrade to 5.8 already, so I decided I would run a filesystem check on my 1TB backup disk before backing up my computer. I always unmount it, but then I just physically disconnect it. I believe it's also ext3 (It's been a while since I've used it). Anyways, I've been told it has errors on disk that should be corrected.

I run fsck on the i partition and get this:

I'm at a bit of a loss for what to do now. It seemed to mount fine, so I unmounted it, but I don't know what to do next.

I have another, much smaller flash disk with a similar issue, but I know that it's never been interrupted on write, so I think my system is just telling me I should check it because it's also ext3. I'm not that worried about this one.

Sorry for such a long post, but I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thinkpad / Laptop buying thread

Hey /tech/,

I fuarrrked up (in my opinion) and bought a Macbook Pro. Rather than spend a lot of time setting it up with GNU/Linux I think I may just jump ship, sell the MBP and buy a Thinkpad instead.

The last Thinkpad I owned was a t42, which was a great machine but suffered from a few issues, although the compatibility was excellent.

Does anyone have ownership experience with newer Thinkpads, are there any you can recommend?

Good RAM and a nice screen resolution are preferred.

Feel free to suggest laptops that aren't Thinkpads too, although good compatibility with GNU/Linux is a must.

I'm trying to brainstorm a PC mod that I have wanted to do for years now.

I want to fully submerge an intel NUC mobo in a 4wx4lx8h tank, and watch bubbles rise in said tank

the mobo would preferably be laid flat on the bottom.

How could I run minidisplay port straight through one of the sides of the tank without introducing a leak?

miniPCIe things

Hey guys I have a question for you. I have an laptop with two spare full-height miniPCIe slots. What can I do with them? BIOS whitelist will not be an issue. I was thinking of a miniPCIe SSD but I cannot find a *mPCIe* SSD, all of them seem to be mSATA or implement some IDE interface using the reserved pins. AFAIK, a mPCIe SSD could work if there was a SATA controller that was wired to the actual chips and that exposed the SSD to the computer as a generic SATA drive

Alright, Lainfriends. Here's the deal.

One of my friends lives at home, and in the past, his dad has attempted to install keyloggers and other whatnot on said friend's PC while he's sleeping, demand access to his browser history, and other stuff. I have no idea why he does this, but according to said friend, he's gotten into major blowouts with his parents over discussing the possibility of him being gay on the internet before, among other things.

Anyway, he messaged me today, saying that he saw his dad using a packet sniffer earlier, and asked if there was something he could do. I told him that as far as I know, any encryption isn't any good since it's his local network that's being sniffed anyway.

Is there anything he can do?

Smart-Room Multi-Media Rasp-Pi?

I am moving into a new house and I am getting a new room. To fit, I wanted to create a RasPi that would control my entire room, kind of like a /cyb/ smart house only it runs on Linux.

In my ideal, and probably unrealistic, expectations, I wanted to have the RasPi plugged into an old 19” LCD, controlled by a wired xbox 360 controller with right and left trigger bound to mouse buttons and the analogue stick working to move the cursor around. There is very little need for any typing, if any once it is booted up.

From there I want to create a simple GUI to turn on and off several USB ports that will power small speakers, LED lights and some other simple stuff for my room, nothing that needs anything beyond “turn on” and “turn off”.

After this I want it to have the final ability of being able to play the game “Defcon”, for which I know there is Linux support. To what extent, I am not familiar. I will use this like a screensaver where I let the bots play their game in the back ground to give my room a Cold War command centre vibe for the hell of it.

This is as much a learning experience as it is designed to actually succeed. So my question is the following: Is it possible? If so, what methods are the most efficient to accomplish the goal? If not, what needs to be changed to make it achievable?

I currently have limited knowledge in coding, but I am fully prepared to learn any language to whatever extent I required to achieve this. Regardless of anything, that’s why it is a learning experience.

So what Distro should I use? What language for the GUI? Are there ways to use 360 controllers as mice? What am I missing? What would make this better? What would you add or remove?

What do you guys know about Red Teams? Specifically the guys at redteams.net

Apparently, they are former military special forces (or so they say) who now do pen testing and cyber security consulting for Fortune 500 companies. Basically white hat hackers. Their blog is always boasting about "Plan, Execute, and Vanish" and the "Red Team Mindset." They post some stories about their latest client work but they are vague and very secretive.

They seem to have ties with goruck.com as they are always promoting their products. They occasionally have raffles where you donate via PayPal for a chance to win a tactical watch (as well as other tactical gear). They claim they donate funds to charity orgs that help military veterans.

I donated some money a while back for one of their raffles. But a day later, their blog post about it just disappeared and they never announced a winner. Their PayPal name was under a "Uri Fridman." Googling his name led me to his site (http://ufridman.org) and it just leads to redteams.net.

I get the feeling these guys aren't what they claim to be and are just full of soykaf. Any thoughts?

Javascript weirdness

Whichever browser you use, have you ever noticed that sometimes due to bugs, when you click on a button the browser just ignores the javascript behind the code.

I've been having this problem for a while, and I've searched a lot, and played around a lot too, but nothing has been of any use so far.
I have a Lenovo B40-30 laptop, and I just can't manage to turn it off without forcing it (long press), and I can't suspend it either, because it just freezes. I've tried this with elementary, which would just freeze at the logo, arch linux, which gives me this error https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd#cgroup_:_option_or_name_mismatch.2C_new:_0x0_.22.22.2C_old:_0x4_.22systemd.22 and manjaro-i3 with OpenRC, which froze when trying to unmount. I haven't used linux in a several years and after finding Lainchan and lurking for awhile you guys gave me the bug again so I decided to buy a thinkpad see what's changed.

I got the t430 for about $230 off of ebay. i5, 4gb ram 320gb hdd Almost pristine condition, the only noticeable things is a blemish just below the lenovo logo but aside from that it was much better than I expected. boots up fine and everything seems to work.

Currently downloading fedora 23. I ordered some flash drives and a few books off of Amazon but that won't get here until a bit later. Unfortunately, I have night school so I'm not gonna mess with it until I get back around 11.

Recently, there has been a lot of controversy and confusion over the de-listing of /tech/. As one of the new /tech/ mods, I would like to make a statement and clear some of this up.

/tech/ was de-listed because of the general soykaf brewing, lack of intelligent conversation, and general glitterboyism.

Now that /tech/ is back on the header, we need to make some changes around here. All you have got to do is follow the rules. The ones that you need to take special care to are those that follow.

1. You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soy

2. Always argue in good faith and avoid using personal attacks.

3. Don't respond with aggression to perceived flames or trolls (or at all.)

Any posts that break these rules will be removed, and repeat offenders will be drezzed.
