Have been running this for 2 years,
probably not my smartest move.

It's only stable at this core voltage.
as of late the bus speed and core voltage bounch around a bit (197 - 203 | 1.439 - 1.448).

Appart from that it's decently stable and cool, pretty much never gets above 50. And performance remains alright.

Is this ALIX?

If so how the fuarrrk do you connect up the serial controler to command it? (mine is not playing ball - or i'm too lame) - wish I had got the one with onboard video controler!

intel edisons runs yocto, and are pretty powerful (dual-core 500mhz & 1gb ram), with onboard wifi/bluetooth. compact as soykaf and you can get arduino board for it
the galilleo is more strictly an arduino-alternative

Apparently Linus admits that the linux kernel is designed without security in mind but says that it doesnt really matter : “If I have to worry about that kind of scenario happening,” Torvalds added with a wry grin, “I won’t get any work done.”.

What are your thoughts on this? Is this just normies trying justify their decision to not install gentoo?

So just how secure is linux really? Does linux implement good security or does it just benefit from the fact that not many people use it therefore no one really bothers to write malware for linux? Also this happened today

If anyone has ever looked at a CVE, all of the critical patches for remote and local exploits are usually fixed within a week tops.

Secondly, what is this article even trying to say? They are writing about the side that is criticizing Linus for focusing too much on the performance and progress of the kernel and then go around to talk about completely different software that has nothing to do with or are completely unrelated to the kernel.

Actually, this is one of the few times that the distinction between GNU/Linux and Linux seems very important.
>Yet even among Linux’s many fans there is growing unease about vulnerabilities in the operating system’s most basic, foundational elements — housed in something called “the kernel,” which Torvalds has personally managed since its creation in 1991. Even more so, there is concern that Torvalds’s approach to security is too passive, bordering on indifferent.

Sounds like it's time to shove a boot up Linus's Scandinavian ass and start Freenix.

I guess I'm not using Ixquick or Startpage anymore, not that I really used them much to begin with.

What search engines do you all use that aren't Bing, Google, DuckDuckGo, Ixquick, or Startpage?

What webrings do you use?

How do you browse the web in your daily life?

I'm really a nooksurfer, so I can live without a search engine. Plenty of interesting links get put here constantly and I still have dozens of bookmarks I need to read, each with their own jungle of other interesting links.

I've been having this problem for a while, and I've searched a lot, and played around a lot too, but nothing has been of any use so far.
I have a Lenovo B40-30 laptop, and I just can't manage to turn it off without forcing it (long press), and I can't suspend it either, because it just freezes. I've tried this with elementary, which would just freeze at the logo, arch linux, which gives me this error https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd#cgroup_:_option_or_name_mismatch.2C_new:_0x0_.22.22.2C_old:_0x4_.22systemd.22 and manjaro-i3 with OpenRC, which froze when trying to unmount. I haven't used Windows on it, but I assume it'd work.

Does anybody know how to fix it, have any ideas or can try to help me understand why this happens?
>>

 No.13756

I have an i7 and one of the cores would hang on shutdown, saying that it was working on a process. This happened in both antergos and arch. I tried to figure it out but it was too time consuming. This is one of the reasons I went to manjaro. Now I can shutdown/restart without a hard power off.

I haven't used linux in a several years and after finding Lainchan and lurking for awhile you guys gave me the bug again so I decided to buy a thinkpad see what's changed.

I got the t430 for about $230 off of ebay. i5, 4gb ram 320gb hdd Almost pristine condition, the only noticeable things is a blemish just below the lenovo logo but aside from that it was much better than I expected. boots up fine and everything seems to work.

Currently downloading fedora 23. I ordered some flash drives and a few books off of Amazon but that won't get here until a bit later. Unfortunately, I have night school so I'm not gonna mess with it until I get back around 11.

If you don't mind a Debian base you could give Q4OS a try. The DE is Trinity, which is basically an older version of KDE. Personally, I prefer older KDE over new KDE. The look and feel of Q4OS is similar to how Windows was at its peak (Win 98 - 2000). Not everyone's cup of tea I'm sure, but I love it.

That was the idea, though now that I've had a chance to use it it doesn't seem to be that slow. Gentoo it is.

whenever I install arch if I try and set up the network it just fuarrrks everything up and ends up not working. like it just seems so much nicer to use wifi-menu especially on a laptop when im probably on different networks anyways each time i boot it up.

Hello lainons! Let's discuss HDDs.

What HDDs are you using?
Which HDDs are currently the best ones? (I personally never had luck with WDs while Seagates always worked well for me, but I heard that Seagate's build quality gone downhill.)

I also asked my friend for advice and he told me that if I were to buy a 1TB drive, it's best to buy an one-platter one; the damage rates are probably lower and it makes sense.
I'll probably buy WD10EZEX 'cause it's somewhat cheap in my country.

Samsung Evo 500 GB, Toshiba 128GB, and Plextor 128GB SSDs here.

Also some external Seagate 4tb usb 3.0 storage drives. These are honestly shitty, totally slow, but cheap for the space.

In fact, I don't know of any good usb 3.0 external drive enclosures. It seems they all have flaws. Has anyone had any good experiences with external enclosures?

currently in use for a year now: Samsung EVO 250 GB, 2x WD Red 1 TB. Satisfied with them.
I've got two 7 or 8 year old drives, one Hitachi, the other I don't remember. They never failed me.
I'd recommend WD Reds. Stay away from greens or research them beforehand. NO experience with blues.

Do you guys have an opinion about 15kRPM drives? I bought one years ago and this machine still runs on it. Loud as fuarrrk but faster than HD and cheaper than SSD. Is the price/speed ratio worth it for RAID or something if you don't mind the noise?

What is advanced tech support? It's something that involves tinkering with yoursystem beyond something that can be resolved merely by glimpsing at man page or simple googling. Blend of hacks and system programming to get nifty tricks done.
If your problem is about getting something to work, this thread is not for you.
If you seek to get things done in not obvious way, ask away.

what exactly do you even mean with that?
and what did you try so far?
example idea: find / -type f -name *.pdf | xargs chmod o-r
