my current 5+ year plan is to finish my degree get a stable and preferably comfy job in order to save up for a house in the middle of nowhere and do nothing but work and play eve.

X3 was a huge disappointment. It's basically Truck Simulator in space. If you enjoy the latter, you'd like the former. It's limited to maps instead of free-roaming. Bought the complete X3 set and started with Albion Prelude. Don't think I'll go back to it.

If you're into top-down, I'd recommend RingRunner: Flight of the sages. It's one of my all-time faves. The story is great, I enjoy the mechanics, but it can be a little overwhelming at first.

Elite Dangerous is great. It would be even better if they'd port it to linux. Apparently it's on the table. But I find it weird they have it running on Mac but not Linux yet :(

Best space sim? Just cause you can manually fly down to planets, get hopelessly lost in the void, or go days without seeing anyone if you head for fringes on single player or online,

Evochron Mercenary is the best space simulator I've seen.

I'm a beginner myself, only had it for a month on steam before but had to start a new account because you can only transfer characters from steam accounts but can't use your EVE account without steam if you made it with steam.

So I'm pretty much new myself as well, see screenshot for current name.
