What do you guys do for work? How is it? Any interesting stories?

I'm a part time web developer and full-time student, but I'll be leaving soon due to a full course load next semester + a general feeling of disillusionment with the boring soykaf I do for $$$.

They let me work from home but all I ever do is just log on to the company slack and proceed to play video games, I kinda wonder if my boss even bothers to check what the hell I'm doing on the internet when I'm actually at the office, too.

I'm an inspector for oil tools. Been doing it since I dropped out of community college several years ago(trying to finish my associate now).

It's alright, the workload is light all I do is watch really. I also get insight into how the oilfield works. Although it's not surprising since I'm in Texas that I landed here.

It's been rough the past year not gonna lie. Seeing as how the oil price crashed and whatnot. I'm not even certain I'll be employed next year. I have a few backup plans however, once I'm done with school I'll see if it's time to jump ship.

Wow, it's really true what they say about the grass being greener. I sometimes think about what would've happened if I had tried my hand at actually working with computers but what's done is done. The way I see it, you'll get disillusioned everywhere. At least with software there are tons of projects that are done with good intentions that you can contribute to. Plus, money is money. At least you get to hone a legitimate skill rather than doing cookie cutter soykaf like flipping burgers.

Funny enough, there was a point during the summer where I was doing both webdev and flipping burgers at the same time. I'd work the night shift at a basic diner, head home, drink a bunch of coffees, take a shower, put on a nice shirt, and head to my office job just two hours later. I paid for it with my sanity at the time (staying awake for upwards of 36-40 hours at a time before getting any sleep) but I raked in a nice income for a disposable student skiddie.

I work at a small IT store/company in the DEEP south. We have a few clients, doctors offices, a private academy, and two pretty posh "country clubs".

I like it well enough, I have a lot of freedom and we get to drink beer after 4p.m., thought I do feel like I'm stagnating and not learning anything new from the job.

I have an associates and a few certifications, so if I moved I could probably get a decent job, but I'm happy.

>stagnating
I think this is a really hidden part of the work culture where whenever we feel as thought we "stagnated" it means we're in a soykaf job. Weigh the benefits vs what you could get but at the end of the day you're just there for the paycheck. What real difference does it make and if you have it easy all the more reason to enjoy it.

What certs do you have btw?

You're living the dream lainon. If I ever manage to finish my master degree well enough to start a PHD I'll totally go for this. Are you working in freelance?

I'm currently working in my university library. Having to keep the place quiet really stress me when it occurs but other than that it let me plenty of time for doing my research (browsing lainchan et IT related sites instead of humanities bullshytes).

I'm a full time student but soon planning on getting into the family business of farming, of all things. You'd be amazed at how much money and job opportunity is available in this industry. The average age of farmers in this country is like 65 and the current practices reflect that. There's so much room for improvement and innovation, using tech to make things easier and more efficient. It's not all field labor. I'm learning code to automate the stupid things.

Fun stories though? I mean I guess see a lot crazy soykaf out in the country that most city-dwellers would never see. 12 foot alligators eating boar hogs whole from the irrigation canal where workers frequently wash their hands.

How did you find that work-from-home job? That seems like a great way to get some side dosh.

How do you afford internet, food, and a place to live?

>>

Because I live with my mom.

Strangely enough, she doesn't really care because she sees me on the same level as a low functioning Autist.

And that doesn't bring you great shame?

No.

No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to hold down a stable job.

Both me and my mom are happy, my mom is pretty old so I just do pretty much everything around the house.

My mom gets to watch TV and sleep all day, and I get to not work. Win Win.

I'm a PhD student who has no problem getting internships that are top tier because of my publications (very extensive for my age) and my advisors connections. I'll never have to TA (I half assed one semester for the requirement), I'll always have funding, even if I take a long time I'll probably never get kicked out because I do keep publishing and I'm definitely raising the prestige of my department in my area.

>tfw I hate everything I work on

>tfw I'm already isolated from my friends and family and have to move across the country every few semesters because who turns down an internship at Google or Microsoft
>tfw I drive to the lab every day thinking about how easy it would be to just become a high functioning opiod addict with darknet heroin or better yet, just end it all in one last healing wave of crushing opiate warmth
>tfw I can't quit because it would bring shame to myself and my family and I'd literally rather kill myself than admit to anyone that I didn't ~have what it takes~

How can I fake my own death?

>ugh, my life is so awful, I'm well respected, intelligent, have all the money and job offers I could need...

>>

I'm not intelligent. I'm actually a massive fraud. I was able to bluff my way into my first internship, then job, and get several publications without actually doing any real work. I was and probably still am a much better developer than most CS students my age but am still not a good developer.

I'm slowly running up against the limits of my ability. I've tried to pivot into more of a social science deal but that isn't working well.

I'm so afraid that soon the house of cards I live in will collapse and I'll be left with nothing.

Also thanks to my shitty impulse control I have a few thousand in credit card debt I can't really shake and being a PhD student doesn't really pay, lainon. I could certainly get a job at more than a few places, but I don't think I'd last long and again, literally would rather kill myself than have to admit to the world at large that I'm not what I've built myself up as.

I'm sort of classic high INT, crap WIS, mediocre CHA. (And of course near zero STR/AGI/CON, I'm a programmer after all)
