I've found it help a lot having mantras (or like a relaxing chant) that you can use when your mind starts to overload... I have a few ~ Relax, empty your mind. let your thoughts pass away into nothing... that is one I use when I can't stop thinking/need to chill. I was then breaking the mind's function down into parts ~ relax, focus, listen - like they are applicable in different settings...
