How do I get myself to stop wasting so much time?

Everyday I waste so much time refreshing forums and stuff. Lainchan isn't so bad since it's slower, but it happens with Hacker News and sometimes 4chan. I don't even enjoy the content in those sites, but it's an impulse to go to them.

How can I develop the self-discipline to not do this? It makes me feel terrible when it's been say, five hours and I haven't done what I needed to do. I don't even care that much about not doing schoolwork/studying, but I feel like I am wasting time I could be using in learning interesting stuff by myself.

Thanks for any help.

Behavioral patterns just develop this way, some people are better at breaking the habits (not being impulsive) than others.

Break the habits by going for a walk and just physically removing yourself from your bad habits.

Best of luck.

What this lain said. Take walks, whenever I'm feeling unproductive I go for short walks and let my mind wander to reset then actively focus on whatever I want to focus on when I get back. If I have no focus when I'm back I end up cycling back into the same patterns and habits. It helps to articulate goals, write them down, find ways to work at them in a rational way. Don't write out things like 'make money' - write out specifics like 'make $300 a day' that way the goals and how to get to those goals can be visualized and acted upon.

I'm a notorious time waster but I've found success by doing the above.

even "make $300 a day" is a terrible thing to write down

you have to be super specific.

breaking every task down into small increments with a little box drawing beside each one that you can put a little tick in after you've accomplished it. build momentum. always knowing the next thing you need to do.

it's also a fun exercise, planning things ahead in little steps.

you could try getting other habits, too. ones that don't feel like wasted time and just drown out these useless ones.

although i'm pretty sure that everything you do is wasted time anyway, because they are just means to a useless end like staying alive, healthy, enjoying life, getting/staying employed or financially okay, getting gf, keeping your emotions okay, filling in your curiosity, etc.

For sure. That's what I was trying to get at.

Being able to roboticize tasks is key. There's a lot of mental stress in the decision making process, you need to really take the decision making out of the action itself. When you go grocery shopping time yourself. Then next time make a list, get specific. As specific as you can. Buy a brand of eggs, a brand of milk, set parameters. Cut the decision making off from the action and time that along with how long it took you to make the list. Our indecision many times rests on many different things. Old soviet sociologists called it the 'tyranny of choice' and it leads to aimless fruitless lifestyles that spend hours doing what amounts to pointless comparisons.

I understand this behaviour, been there done that.

First, you don't have to feel bad. This is just something that happens.

You do this because it is a small reliable dose of happy. Weak but reliable.

Next is the change bit. Learn to love what you have done. It may me small, insignificant, but love it anyway. Use that to motivate more.

You didn't waste 3 hours on HN, you learnt some trivia, fuelled brain ideas. Excellent, now move onto the next thing.

Lastly when you have identify what it is you want to do. You can't do something if you don't know what it is. Ideally SMART goals, but you can cheat a bit to start with.

If you try and force discipline too hard you just set yourself up for failure, hate of failure moves you to easy addiction. Start easy for success, gradually increase difficulty for higher reward.

This is my way, I'm climbing out a deep pit.

Well, I feel the opposite way. The day is just too short to accomplish all the things I want. I found myself in need to actually schedule entertainment. If I don't, I'll just work all day, and if I work continuously for too long (read: weeks, months), I start to get sad and angry, which is counterproductive. And since my entertainment is basically procrastination (reading the Internet and watching anime), I'd say procrastination is important too.

But how do you stop procrastinating -too much-? Easy - find something that isn't procrastination and picks your interest, then gradually indulge in it. In my case it was the right open source project and learning foreign language. If you don't have such thing, don't feel bad. Feeling bad over procrastinating, when you can't even imagine what you should be doing instead, is kind of pointless.
