I don't know how many Americans here have seen the "Real Cost of Tobacco" ads they keep playing on some networks, but one thing bothers me about some of them. I'm not talking about the ones that more directly address the health risks. I'm talking about the other ones that are all "Big tobacco be like..."

If people are buying tobacco still, they're buying it because they like it and either ignore the risks willingly or accept them. But some of these ads really emphasize the fact "HEY, THEY'RE MAKING MONEY!" But if people want to give up their money to smoke tobacco and each tobacco product has that surgeon general's warnings and all these ads about the health risks of tobacco warn people and yet they still want to smoke, the fault is strictly the consumers', isn't it? Why should the tobacco company be vilified just for meeting the consumer's own demands and getting compensation for it? People might say "they're making money off a product that kills people," but, again, their customers aren't being forced to buy it, especially when tobacco companies don't even run television ads anymore.

I'm pretty sure they aren't. Or at least the kinds of ads they can make are highly restricted by law.

They would if they could. Smoking has gone down a huge amount. Maybe I'm just old enough to remember back when tons of people smoked and before joe camel got derezzed .

Well thing is I work in a call center and I'm only allowed to listen to Pandora for entertainment. Pandora has ads that can't be turned all the way down, even if you mute your computer and the program. I can't take of the head-set because it's my job. It's just like 1984 where the telescreens can't be turned off. Either I don't get any media at all, or I have to deal with advertisements. If I turn off Pandora when the ad shows up, it's right back when I turn it back on. They don't allow me administrator status so I'm very limited as to what I can do with the computers.

What would you do in my situation?

>What's really scary about the lack of TV ads is the amount of money they spend on advertising. Makes you is wonder where the money is going. especially when threads like this pop up.

Maybe they shoot some of that advertising money to the anti-smoking ads? Wouldn't be surprised, given how much tobacco companies have donate to things like cancer research.

But also, it may be that a lot of other countries just aren't as strict about the amount of open advertising done by tobacco companies. Likewise, even if tobacco is becoming more of a niche thing, there's definitely still areas where advertising to that niche market is needed. There's plenty of smoker's magazines and posters for smoking products which are put up in liquor stores and smoke shops.

>>18663

>I'm pretty sure they aren't. Or at least the kinds of ads they can make are highly restricted by law.

I just think it's a bit unfair. I could understand tobacco commercials not being allowed to air when children may be watching, but I think the restriction or stigma is becoming just a little too extreme.

There was a really nice post I saw on /r/ about the emptiness of mindless consumerism. I came today because, remembering that post this morning, I decided to save it however it seems as /r/ is littered with mostly dead threads, it was pushed off the catalog. Now I'll never have it and thus upsets and frustrates me. I wish lainchan had an archive but apparently, archives are not compliant with lainchan's ideals. This was never fully explained. Then again, I never fully asked either.

Well, I watched Pulp Fiction for the first time yesterday and I intend to watch more "classics" later today as I hope to mindlessly consume media in order to distract myself. Vidya is no longer fun. Chans are no longer fun. Anime and movies are all I have left and even then, I don't even have the social acuity necessary to understand the character interactions in depth so any deep themes and symbolism is completely lost on me. In the end, I end up having more fun reading about why the film was so great than actually experiencing it. I care more about the perception of the experience than the experience. The spectacle has already consumed me.

What are your thoughts on SHTF type situations? Do you have any plans set in place? The basic things you can do is IMO is this

>get healthy

This should be your priority. Lasik, dental work, vaccinations, necessary surgeries if possible etc. You won't have time to deal with this soykaf when SHTF. At that point, it's do or die and you don't want to be dealing with things such as dental pain.

>get fit not /fit/

Progressive callisthenics and running(maybe even swimming)

With weights you open yourself up to injury if you don't have the proper guidance and that's something you don't want. Plus the absolutely last thing you want is to be dependant on heavy equipment.

2 books that are widely rec'd are Ross Enemait's Never Gymless and Convict Conditioning.

>be good with the law

it's just that SHTF and "the happening" strike me as silly /pol/ memes and I know being prepared for disaster is pretty important in a dangerous society (okay, if you can afford a plane ticket and have anything resembling family abroad you're pretty much set) but the whole thing feels weirdly fake and political.
I think >>18101 has the right idea with "plan for the personal apocalypse", problems are much more subjective and I don't think general advice for if we were suddenly in fallout would be actually helpful except as an intellectual exercise.

>Passport
>Plane Ticket
>When you actually talk to people who have lived through horrible, horrible, SHTF style situations, these are the two items that they wish they'd had.

While I agree I think that before you get to that point you have to secure yourself at home first. The point about people focusing too much on the little things is incredibly frustrating. Especially when you see these shows about preppers spending untold thousands on frivolous things. It's just another facet of consumerism masquerading itself as survivalism.

But back to the topic of securing yourself, what's the point of getting a plane ticket if you have a parking ticket or violation preventing you from leaving or even getting the actual passport(which it probably won't but the point still stands).

And what after you get to another country? You want to be ready to hit the ground running. You should definitely be in a healthy condition and reasonably well armed in the brains department or else you'll be taken advantage of.

I still think it show go like this:

-health
-be good with the law as best you can

Film projectors are fun because they are intricate yet you can see how they function rather clearly.

They also prove to be superior to may new forms of media. For example, IMAX HD is much better than Digital IMAX in terms of picture quality. Additionally, most high profile television shows are shot with film.

>>

You don't really need a new bike for general use; dig around your local classifieds for an old ten-speed road bike or '90s rigid mountain bike (replace knobby tires with slicks for road use).
A lot of them were ~$1500 new and can be had for a tenth of that.

>>

ID: 752211 No.18428

Are you going to use it for everyday transportation? I've been using only bike for a few months and it's not very much maintenance. The import parts are:

1. Get new treads for winter so you don't die (only applicable if your snow drifts are over 6 inches)

2. grease your chain once a week during winter or once a month during summer

3. don't buy a stolen bike (see >>18420)

4. don't get shocks for city biking because they make you ride slower

5. run red lights :)

Bruh it's the ice under the snow what'll get ya, that's why winter tires have metal studs.

Yeah it actually did, really neat. Especially bit about how a lab is perfected before it is carried out, but software like a painting is built upon and slowly reaches "perfection".

Dont entirely agree about pseudocode though, there is certainly some merit in getting a clear idea of how you are gonna go about making anything before you jump straight in. Of course you could say like a painter you just get an idea in your head, but thats hard for many at first with programming. Kind of like how in most beginner art classes you do a light sketch before messing with paints.

They ended up freeing like 4 little girls from some Australian guys basement, secretly took over the website, and would arrest members, then pose as those members to gain the trust of new members then arrest them. Rinse/repeat until every user was arrested.

I used to do the Reddit /r/news and /r/worldnews thing, but then they went corporate-censorship-crazy and started banning people for discussing trade treaties. They also developing a hivemind where anyone male, white, and european-descended was to blame for absolutely everything.

So I moved over to anything-goes Voat, but /v/news and /v/worldnews are merely a new sort of hivemind full of raging bigots who think that anyone not male, white, and european-descended is to blame for absolutely everything.

I'm sick of both extremes. I just want to know what's going on in the world without getting trapped in a news bubble. I'm thinking of doing the self-hosted TTRSS thing and loading it with a zillion RSS feeds from a wide variety of sources, but then the problem is in filtering to what's important.

What I'm really looking for is some sort of RSS reader (either hosted or standalone) that automatically curates based on what words are most common in the news of the day, rather than keywords that I set ahead of time. Any ideas on how this could be accomplished?

It might be a bit weird. But I get most of my general news from my country's two main newspapers. Occasionally I check in on the Guardian and the Telegraph (not so much the Guardian any more because it has been pretty soykaf lately). But this is mainly almost as a form of entertainment, not to know what's going on in the world. I think most news outlets know this and it's why they act like they do.

One of my main news sources is word of mouth. I hear people talking about it and check various sources to see what it's about. Afterwards, I might check some peoples opinions or thoughts on it too. Thats my favourite way of doing it, and also probably the best. Spending evenings doing that with a cup of coffee can be pretty comfy.

Sometimes I also read the newspapers they have at cafes.

To be honest, I don't understand modern obsession with news. News create a false sense of being 'informed', always trying to seem important, while in reality they spoon-feed you with propaganda. People waste hours onthis, it's saddening. I'll tell you the news: a plane will crash, there will be a floodin this country you don't care about, dow jones industrial average will drop by 100 points (holy сrap, it's happening!), new motherfuarrrker elected for president (totally not a prick this time), new bombings in Palestine, a school shooting. There will be a snow and frost in winter, rivers of melted soykaf in spring, warm summer and rainy autumn. Next time you read an article header, ask yourself "will this change my life?"

I trust only first hand witnesses. For some recent events, real thing was opposite from government news. It didn't change life, but proved how gornment treats us, common people. Pardon me for my rant.

ProPublica does some great investigatory reporting.

For an example on US domestic issues, see their series of reports on workers comp https://www.propublica.org/series/workers-compensation and temporary labor https://www.propublica.org/series/temp-land

They have a nice list of their investigative works. It's not all as important as the two I mentioned, but it's pretty interesting nevertheless.
