well, we received a research paper on ascii art for instance. You could talk about a programming language if you wanted, or about topics in psychology, chemistry, or biology (because /drg/ and /zzz/). If it fits the feel of the site, go for it. If you're unsure, still go for it because we can just filter out anything that's too off topic from the final release.

artwork wise we will probably have ANSI and glitch art, if you want to do more computer generated stuff like pixel sorting go for it, if you're a digital artist or a photographer who takes pictures of cities still go for it. I was talking to someone the other day who made a comic strip, that would be really cool, especially since we need something to go in the fun and games section.

okay, so yesterday here's what happened:
>volunteers organized for creation of the zine on tox and IRC
>a mailing list was created for updates on the zine
>several works were submitted, which we are still in the process of editing
>volunteers quickly realized that tox is not the best platform for discussing these things
>deadline was agreed upon and announced
>lambda was invited to participate, immediately began arguing
>discussion concerning a dedicated FTP server for submissions and editing occurred. I will be paying $6/month for an FTP server and domain name. The server will hopefully be up before this weekend.
>I realized that emails are possibly getting dropped from junk0@openmailbox.org, and made an announcement.
>minor discussion about artist/author credit. I believe we are going to exclude the creator's name unless explicitly stated otherwise. Zine will be credited to lain. I was also thinking a credits page at the end
>we currently have 20 confirmed submissions, 4 of which made it through to the email and 15 of which we are still waiting for. 1 other submission was given through pastebin on IRC

Well it specifically deals with Iran from 1500 to 1900. It covers how crops like opium and tobacco affected social life and the economy, but it also deals with the religious responses in Iran to things like wine, tobacco, opium, cannabis, etc. The author points out that in many cases it was more nuanced than some people believe, with a variety of opinions that weren't always just reckless indulgence or absolute prohibition.

The chapter I'm on right now deals with wine's place during the Safavid dynasty and how a number of the Shahs literally drank themselves to death by the age of thirty and in some cases ruled Islamic Iran half-drunk.

I kinda value good typesetting and text that is created with the reader in mind.

Maybe releasing in a couple of formats would be cool like epub or html. It doesn't cost that much extra time.

Good entry level educational material has value anon! Not everybody can decipher complicated manuals and the people who can, aren't really the target audience of the material in the first place.

The NSA's ideal world is a world in which the knowledge of technology is restricted so I think spreading this knowledge is really important.
It is the task of us technophiles to educate other about technology. I can imagine there are a lot of people on /drg/, /zzz/, /lit/ and /weeb/ that don't know anything about hacking.
I personally only know the bare minimum and want to delve deeper when I have more time .

On an other note there was a thread a while ago -i can't remember which board- about cool lain related websites, so maybe a list pf those would be a schway idea for the zine. There a lot of snazzy webzones out there but there isn't really a (de)central collection that lists all of them.

I’ve read it.
Typeset isn’t unified and some articles look great and some are horror. Some paragraphs have first line indentation, some do not. Do you guys use styles to bring typeset in order? Some articles imply British English style with single quotes, others the American style. Strangely enough, the former tend to look better. Lots of mistakes in ‘FreeBSD for dummies’ is a shame. Did anybody read it before including!?

Now about articles.

> introduction to cryptography

is interesting. Will look forward to the next part.

> FreeBSD for dummies

Seriously? FreeBSD doesn’t have PAE? I think that if you’re not restrained in your choice (I mean if you aren’t bound to some programs that exist only in x86 or x86_64 variant, or have hardware short on RAM) it’s only a matter of preference.

Anyway, that was a great job and I feel like writing an article about practical use of cryptography myself.

The typography is, of course, far from perfect. It's something we're still working on.

That's an American thing.

>Did anybody read it before including!?

No. There's only four of us and we have our families and daily jobs. Fortunately, not everyone here is a NEET with all the time in the world in their hands. We do this in our free time and none of us are experts in editing or graphic design, so there's that.

Volunteers are welcome.

T-thanks anyway, I g-guess.

No, it’s good. I’ve seen another magazine that came out last month, and lainchan’s work is far superior to it. I even wondered ‘Do they use ~~scribus,~~ latex or some other fine typesetting software?’ Because muh ligatures and stuff.

But why? There’s no deadline for lainzine, isn’t it? There’s only a certain amount of material too be prepared for a particular issue. Some can be left for later (next month), if it’s so needed to keep up the speed of one issue per month.
> Fortunately, not everyone here is a NEET with all the time in the world in their hands.
What would you know about being a NEET? It’s a constant fight with anxieties and fear of becoming an immovable bubble of fat, I am awake 18-20 hours in a row and sleep only 4–6 hours, this kills my immune system, add to this the rest of the fruits sedentary lifestyle brings to you and you get this living nightmare, when you feel like you’re about to pop your clogs almost every second day you have to walk a mile.
Hence to be at least somewhat glad with your own life and not call it just an existence one has to show some self organization. You think all NEETs play MMORPGs all day long, eat, soykaf and sleep? I’d die if I wouldn’t exercise 0,5–2 hours every day, spend a large amount of time learning lots of various things to respond to a higher number of vacancies only to find out that, though the interview went well and I am such a nice guy to talk to, they’ve already hired someone a bit more skilled than me.
> Volunteers are welcome.
I am not a native English speaker, so I’m among the least qualified people to be a grammar nazi for your magazine. Checking English grammar for each case will bump my skills to the new heights, but I’m not going to spend my entire time for it, thanks.
I could try to make a conference in teamviewer to show how to write such PDFs like LainZine in libreoffice writer, but I’m afraid that my spoken English skills will make it twice as long as it should be, because I’ll be constantly correcting myself, and there are manuals in the internet, reading which would give the same result faster.
Though if you insist on my contribution, I could try. But even if I’ll be up to it, I’ll have to arrange the material for these lessons.

Er… I’m not against that, but what I’ve written so far is already four A4 pages, that’s only a half and severely shortened. It is about what can be automated with GnuPG after you set it up to make programs keep their data on the drive encrypted.
> I will write next chapter on math/theory of cryptography and then I might go into programming implementation.

Will saying ‘that’s bad’ and ‘that’s bad’ do? Editing articles I am not interested in, isn’t fun. As far as I am into typesetting, it’s hopeless to automate the process, you’ll have to retype all the text because replacements you use will work only on specified patterns and you can’t hope that all people will send their texts in some unique format. You can’t even hope that they close quotes properly.

Markdown is one step forward, but it isn’t made for typesetting. Forcing everybody send their articles in TeX seems unfeasible to me, and this leaves editors with lots of work.

No, most important is that with markdown you can’t send an ODF typeset with 72 point.

I know, but what's the problem with that? People submit Markdown, we convert to LaTeX, throw some nice styles at it, generated nicely set PDFs. We can also convert it to HTML, mix it with some CSS and again have another format to publish.

would anyone here be interested in a printed version of lainzine? I know a place who could do it rather cheap, about $15 or so a piece, and maybe $5 shipping worldwide.

(typesetter here) That'd be awesome. $15 seems a bit much for 30-something pages, though. Not that much, really, I'd be willing to throw that out for at least one piece.

I printed the first issue out for my own use. Just used normal printer paper, then put a clip to hold it. Can't double print, due to ink. Also, I looked a bit at it, and hypothetically you could get it for $15 with free ship. wouldn't turn any profit though. any profit that would be gained would go to the site.

Also, the design that I was using was a bit advanced, and is somewhat akin to a program you would get at a sports game, where the cover is think paperback, and is resistant to bending. Would also go great on a bookshelf. All hypothetical.

some of the articles are alright, some aren't. the mag is just barely getting articles. another site called abandonware.com only has had 3 magazines in 7 years. that's a very small amount. we need more quality articles.
