I'm always impressed by how one of my favourite authors - Philip Dick - can move between many different stories and always have a succinct way to give an android a new name that implies its capacity and function.

Robant, simulacra, etc. I'm writing up a story at the moment and trying to do the same. What are some cool names that I can use? My robot type beings are sentient androids that are made from protein-based nanostructures.

@op i don't know man im bad at naming

OP here; I actually did mean race/being names, but I'd also be open to specific character names too.

I like composite, made me think of genetic recombination for some reason

not him but "mortal" sounds interesting. I'd like to see what the implications are in a society that calls robots mortals

I really love the word Andy's in Do androids dream of electric sheep.

What do the humans think about the androids in your world? Are they on equal level with humans? Can you tell a person and an android apart? I think the best names reflect the society that coined them.

I think you should start with the usage of the word and work from there. In what situations does a person need to differentiate between humans and androids? When did it start? Think about the context and history of the word.

I really like http://www.thesaurus.com/ for this because you can click trough related words and get some inspiration that way.

I have an android in a story that I'm writing called "servo". In retrospect, maybe that wouldn't have been a bad name for all beings like him.

Though it's tempting to look for names that relate to human physiology, you can also focus on one aspect (in my case, servomotors), or just have a seemingly unrelated term. Can, grid, Stype, etc. I could see some of those terms (as well some of the ones already posted in this thread) potentially being used in our very own future.

Hardware servant, in reference to software services in the sense of software-as-a-service. You don't even rent them, you contract them from agencies. And they of course are designed get their business as much profit as they can, from data mining to swiping anything that looks plausibly discared. Of coruse they also try to manage publicity to an extent, some more gracefully than others. Similar machiens are available for sale, but are considered hard to maintain since you need to look after them yourself, and more expensive due to lack of subsidation by privacy invasion. Both but mostly the latter are known as coupon bots for their tendency to collect them on behalf of their owners, they make a point of trying to use them.

Agreed. Perhaps a /cyb/ future where the upper-echelon of humanity is enabled immortality through means of these "mortal" machines of which are constantly discarded as "used".

servo is the sort of name people with no experience in robotics would give a class of robot

It might be helpful to research Greek and Latin root words and prefixes and build something from there (almost like how species are named).

True, unless it is some type of acronym. Engineers love acronyms.
