I've been rocking one of these since they were new, with custom firmware of course. the prs-300 goes for 20-30$ on eBay now. it gets the job done, and that job is reading.

I have a Hanlin V5, it's small, basic and sometimes has problems with ugly PDFs, but it's really useful and I love it.

I use the first generation Kindle Fire. I like it!

I like your attitude. People are so consumerist about hardware these days, it annoys me.

thanks recently i broke my prs-300, and just got a new one for 20$ since it gets the job done.

I have a PRS-T1. I don't use it often because the screen is too tiny to be comfortable. I'd like a 10" ePaper screen but apparently no one ever built such ereader.

I picked up a used Kobu Aura for $50 from Craigslist, they usually go for upwards of $100 so I'd suggest getting one secondhand. It accepts most epub, comic, and plain text formats without a problem and the microSD makes it easy to load up. So far I'm a huge fan of the "apps" which give you a lot of leeway for hacking it to your liking.
One spritzing (http://www.spritzinc.com/) app in particular works wonders for last moment cramming. Recommend the device if you're looking for something higher-end than an ancient ereader but respects your freedom more than a Kindle.

I have a third generation kindle. The only problem is that it has a lot of trouble displaying PDFs.

Isn't that a bit ironic

I also have a Kobo, just wish a free software custom ROM could start appearing to avoid the stupid defaults we're left with on most of these eReader devices. (like mandatory e-mail for authentication and wifi firmware that's most probably proprietary)

what custom firmware is their for these?

http://morgue.openinkpot.org/ is the only one I know of, though unfortunately I heard the single dev stopped porting around a year ago, so I don't know if it's completely abandoned and dated or not.

I had a Sony PRS-505 for years, read epubs and rtf well enough, but I dropped it and all the buttons unsoldered on the inside, and the contacts were too close together for me to fix. I'm picking up a nook simpletouch o root soon though.

I have a Kindle 4 I bought a few years ago. Unfortunately I haven't had the time nor the motivation to read anything recently so all I use it for are manga and pdfs. I didn't load any custom firmware on it, since the kindle OS works pretty well, at least if you're not reading a huge pdf. The only problem is that it doesn't read epubs natively so you have to convert them with Calibre or kindlegen. As for manga and comics, the screen is a bit low-res but converting them with kcc lets you zoom in so it's all good.
I'll stick to it until it dies, it's a really good device for what it does.

Auras are nice, but what I've heard is that there's a delayed sync function that sometimes causes the system to hang for ridiculous amounts of time upon inserting the SD card when there is a large amount of ebooks on the device. Something that can add up to hours, or days.

I don't really believe that it's just soykaftily coded, more like the Aura is designed to allow but discourage such use of non-DRM formats.

Something to consider before you pull the trigger. I read my ebooks on my n900 and make do with a small, but hi-res screen.

Using a nook simple and fully satisfied by it.

I got a PRS-T1BC and generally like it. The only downside I've noticed so far is that it can take up to 10 seconds to switch pages on some PDFs. I don't know if those PDFs are just heavy or somehow busted tho.

I have the same but stopped using it. Have you tried running Android on it? I just want something that will satisfy my freetard needs. AOSP or something without killing the battery life.

only tablet I have is an original ipad.
dont ask why, i just got it as a gift from someone.
can't update the os, which means I can't play any single game on it. I'm pretty much reduced to youtube and reading.
Anyone know anyway to get pdf on a ipad?
I've been emailing it to myself, but it honestly is like kicking dead whales down the beach.

It's Oddman 11, by Dowman Sayman. It's really good, probably one of my favourites. I'd recommend you read his other works too (The Voynich Hotel and Nickelodeon in particular).

I use a Kobo Aura H20, and I think it's fantastic (justifying its $200 price tag). The screeen is larger, faster, higher resolution, and refreshes more fully than my old Kindle 3. It reads epubs, pdfs, cbzs, and the webpages. If I ever need more storage, it has a microSD slot. The whole thing is waterproof, so I take it outside and camping a lot. If I get it dirty, I just wash it off. It's the best I've seen for having the readability of paper while maintaining as many advantages (from being a digital device) as possible.

Have you tried using the share documents to app function in iTunes? Might not be supported on whatever version of iOS the iPad is running.

I used to use the Kindle 4 for eReading. I had a BlackBerry Playbook I used to use at one point as well, but I really only used that for PDFs (was very good for this) and manga. Now I use my Zenfone 2; the screen is big enough and it's convenient.

 No.2522

I had my latest Kindle for like 2-3 years and I left it on top of my car for about 30 min in the sun and now the top portion of the display is fuarrrked, like the type of damage you'd get from stepping on it.

Need to buy a new one. Feels bad. And I don't feel like getting a cheap one because I'm dependent on the backlight and slow page turn rate is like kicking dead whales down the beach

Full charge on my PRS-505 lasts about a month without usage, a few days to a week with heavy usage.
