So iv been researching Mao Zedong and The Cultural Revolution and i gained access to some scholarly texts from my states library. I have since scanned 2 and a half of them and thought you guys might be interested.

There are many books the great Lain wishes could be in our digital
libraries, and a near equal number of projects [0] aiming to bring
them so. None are directly organized for the benefit of Lainchan,
however. Therefore, I offer a proposition for this fine board's
consideration: We crowd-source the funds for an automatic linear
bookscanner [1] [2], which I will build and operate, converting books
selected by the community into digital form. I also have some fun
ideas about how to distribute the physical books post-scan, as a kind
of Kickstarter-esque rewards system.
What say you folks? It's not quite a warehouse in Kasas City, but a
potentially mutually beneficial arrangement nonetheless. E-mail the
throwaway account provided to indicate your interest, or reply in this
thread; once that reaches a critical threshold, we can also discuss
how to actually co-ordinate financial resources for the greater good

Hey lainchan, I want to write a cyberpunkish short story and I'm looking for feedback on the synopsis:

>among this, a datacenter was mostly burned down and abandoned, but underneath in the ground is still the fiber infrastructure / backbone
>protagonist secretly runs small cluster in the ruins of the building (to host an imageboard for his friends maybe?)
>nobody notices it because he uses the locally created solar/wind energy and the area is generally depopulated
>protagonist has found an undocumented backbone switch where no "intersection" should be, checks vlans in it, creates a monitor port on that switch and finds unencrypted internal traffic of /thebigbadcorporation/ in one vlan
>roams ruins for salvageable hardware to recycle and add to his cluster
>accidentally finds a room he hasn't seen before, breaks in
>one rack is still up and running
>plugs into it

>it's the restored backup of something that was involved in the calamity, from a point shortly before the incident happened

Too soykaf to even start? What worries me is that I'd introduce this opportunity waiting for a solution and then instantly present a solution, or is that acceptable for a short story that takes place within a few hours? -

Hey /lit/, does anyone know of contemporary philosophers that write about technology and its relationship to humans and society? When I say contemporary I mean works put out within the past five years or so. I feel like with how rapidly the atmosphere of society has changed with the advent of social media, communications, and government surveillance there would be more people writing opinions on the subject in the ways that philosophers have addressed issues of morality and such in the past. I've been thinking it would be interesting to read what other people have to think, and by the nature of structured and well written philosophy, a welcome alternative to 3 lines of shitposting on anonymous image boards. Obviously RMS would probably be on the list, so does anyone else know of writers on these topics that are worth reading? -

I've found out that FLOSS Manuals writes their manuals using a method called "book sprint". They collect a group of experts, sit them down, and declare that they have 3 or 5 days to write the manual. Apparently it's some agile way to documentation.
They also claim it works for non-technical literature, too.

Hunter S. Thompson is the subject of this month's dump. Two movies were made documenting his eccentric escapades and gonzo style journalism. His character was played by Bill Murray and Johny Depp respectively. His work is a wonderfully queer account of the 60's and 70's, and I can think of no one who's prose would fit the subject better.

I'd like making a story with Lainchan, though I didn't get to joining the last collaborative writing thread before it died. So I'm starting this one. But rather than simply adding on to the end of a story, I'd like to start with the end and add to the beginning. Why? A rambling beginning is easier to handle than a rambling end, and "How does this thing someone just used get introduced earlier?" sounds like a more amusing question to answer than "How does this thing someone introduced get used later?".
I'd try to have an outline to start and then fill in the details, but it could get bogged down too easily that way. So just add anything that seems like it'd fit right before the part you reply to, and then when it feels like we're reaching the beginning we can wrap things up with a start and put it in the next zine. Feel free to put in anything you think would be a good read. Dunno if I should start with something longer but I'll give people a chance to add to it first since I don't want to make things seem locked to something too specific with a bunch of detail at the start.

Flipping the light switch, Smit locked the apartment entrance and went back to work. Going past the bedroom, checking chat systems to comment on the latest inanities and fictions before claiming it was time for bed and minimizing the chat terminal. Instead took a seat in the indoor garden to pick up an artist's tablet. Outlines of plants formed on the display, used as shapes in sketchwork. Over the next hour and a half, a few more character models got built, probably sellable as avatars but still too cutesy to convey the right tone. Does it even make sense to use a different alias for those things anymore? As much as those squirming little runtvatars got derided, at this point the crap for making them is obviously the least serious thing to face. Health comes first though, so turning off the portables Smit finally washed up and laid on the couch to fall asleep again in front of the moving image of a silenced television. -

Hi /lit/!
So, I am wanting to get into the business of buying and selling books. I am thinking of like buying them at garage sales and stuff (where you can usually get a book anywhere from $0.20 to $2) and sell them online.
Before I start buying, though, my mother has a few bins of older books that she doesn't want. She said I can go through, keep what I want, and sell the rest, and I can split the money with her 50/50. Seems pretty good to me, as it will give me experiences in selling.
I am trying to make money this way, rather than getting a job, as my parents would prefer if I started a small business, rather than getting a job (high school senior; still live at home.)
Do you have any good advice, /lit/?

First time poster here. I thought you might be able to help me/advice me a bit on my story.
It's about the son of a ceo of a huge megacorp but when it starts to crumple they send him into a virtual reality sleep where he spends a hundred years or so (in the VR it seems only like a few months)
Now what I have a problem with is making the Virtual Reality really seem virtual.
TLDR: What can I do to hint the fakeness now and then (the reader doesn't know that the mc is in a vr at first)

A masterpiece scifi novel about development of digital pet that grows into much more humanlike AI.
It's interesting because it's quite realistic (and in fact inspires me to continue my own alife experiments).
Other scifi stories often paint AI godlike entity that is created by accident and kills people by some reason, it's very beaten and unrealistic trope, here is why:
In the last decades it became widely understood that learning and development is the main and most technically complex component of an AI. The best learning algorithms learn by finding patterns in the stream of experience IO that flows into AI as it's body interacts with environment.
This is the kind of AI described in this book. -
