I think things are going to be like GiTS, with the few who choose not to have (or can't afford) implants having innate advantages over the others and even being able to manipulate them, as if by magic.

Personally I would never get implants (I'm opposed to tattoos and piercings just because they violate my body in a way)
but I can easily see them getting mass-marketed and popular among consumers

People will obsess about improving (upgrading) as they already do, and our society is getting quite comfortable with technology in all aspects of life

Seriously though, I might consider something that I could program to reward me on completion of certain tasks. I used to do that with food before I started becoming health-conscious.

The only thing holding me back would be the inevitability of corporate/government backdoors. I wonder how open-source wetware would work.

It'll be just like the Oculous Rift v. HMD technology. Any FOSS implant technology startups will stamped out almost immediately because the too-big-to-fail pharm companies in charge of the market don't want people to realize that freedom can coexist with modern technology.
