 No.992

I'm fishing for ideas. I'm accumulating notable amounts of plastic bottles. They're sturdy and in good condition. My state doesn't have a recycling program for me to directly sell them, but it seems like a terrible waste of good resources to toss them out. Apart from basic arts and crafts stuff, does anyone have any suggestions for what I could do as a project? I've got trash bags full of these.

you might be able to dilute them in gasoline, depending on what plastic exactly they are made of.
Makes kickass hillbilly napalm.

You can piss in them. Not as much a need to leave your computer anymore.

google for redemption centers in your state, I will eat my hat if you can't find one.

other than that, why can't you just recycle them like a normal person?

No bueno. I'm only getting metal and electronics recycling for miles and miles.

What fun is tossing quality plastic into a bin for someone else to profit off of when I could make something awesome of it them?

Your gif is related, make a raft out of them using a net and the bottles.

depending on the plastic, you can melt them down (without burning them) and use them as raw material for your purposes.

Tested the plastics.

The plastic of the bottles doesn't seem to singe like some plastics do when fire is applied. When it melts, it creates a hole by peeling back, for a lack of a better term, but it doesn't leave much usable liquid that I could put into a mold or anything. I didn't test the caps, but they feel like they're made of a thicker amount of the same type.

Interestingly the plastic used to wrap the bottles together for distribution would make excellent kindling. It ignites almost instantly, but burns slowly enough that it could be used to light firewood. That certainly wasn't what I was expecting.

The version of plastic reuse I read about melted the plastic in oil, bu tit used plastic bags.

But anon, won't the fumes give me super powers? Like in the movies?

Another form of plastic that I've been accumulating. I like to take a hairdryer and use it like shrink wrap. (Grocery store bags.)

Have you tried heating in a vacuum/inert atmosphere? Vacuum pumps are pretty easy to make and nitrogen is cheap (or you could try distilling if you're feeling ambitious).

Unfortunately, plastic is not easily recyclable.
Recycled bottles end up being different products (like textile) and you can't really get back to old states.
I've read an article somewhere that calimed someone invented a plastic you could recycle ad infinitum like glass. It's not used right now, for safety or lobby reasons. Point is, you can't make something akin to bottles by meting it down.
Maybe try heat bending with a heat gun or be careful not to burn it if using a flame.
If you could find a way to do very fine shavings of it, you could have a way to make textile/house insulation.
other than that, it's using the bottle for crafts or using it as fuel I'm afraid.

Cut off the bottleneck and grow plants in such pots. Or stuff them in wooden crates and make pontoon bridge. If you are a prepper, use it as isolator inside walls of your underground hideout.

OP here. Still checking back.

>Make a warehouse to store all your plastic bottles in.
If I keep this up, I'll need one.

>pontoon bridge
Huh, I hadn't thought about making a bridge... Not sure where I'd make a bridge to though.

How well or how long does chicken wire hold up in water? Would it oxidize and corrode? Or can you think of a better material for holding a configuration in place over time while submerged?

>Cut off the bottleneck and grow plants in such pots.

I'll do this with some of them... What to grow though? What's something useful that grows well indoors, preferably without a heat lamp? I'm hot enough in here with all this hardware going, but I've only ever done outdoor gardening before, like pumpkins and stuff.

>Have you tried heating in a vacuum/inert atmosphere?
No. I'm a noob, what do you suspect would be the result of doing this?

You could make a bioreactor. Run a search some one made one for algae.

Zinc-coated wire will last long. Its just too weak for holding structure. If you go with crates, you can use nylon rope or ribbon for holding crates together. Just make sure to fix it securely by screwing it under wide plank (and through). Chicken wire can be used to fix bottle from open side of a crate.

Dill, parsley, green and black basil, aragula, jalapeno peppers, leek, small carrots. All of them grow on windowstill/balcony, just water them regularly.

This is a good idea. Depending on where you live, smaller, organic focused grocery stores will buy these from you. A nice way to make a little extra cash.
