I have been caught on YT by this channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3_VCOJMaivgcGqPCTePLBA

I really admire people who build stuff by themselves and stuff, but this guy just has too much tools for any of it being reproducible.

But people have been woodworking since the beggining of times with way simpler tools, so is anyone here into this?

Let's share tips, the minimum amount of tools you need to be able to do nice stuff with wood, and ideas of projects!

Another good idea is how to use wood from destructed furniture you find on the streets, since wood is expensive to buy.

All I want is a butcherblock desk jammit .

I need to get access to some cheap hardwood, probably repurposed from old furniture or something. Also I need access to a lathe.

Feels awful man.

do you think you need a lathe to build butcherblock?
also jsut get a OSB panel you pussy, spending a week on a desk is pointless not cyberpunk

What would you cover the OSB with to have a more acceptable surface for writing and stuff?

If you want a halfway decent butcherblock you'll need a lathe. That soykaf has to be cut very uniform to stick together well.

OSB cannot be used for foodware - the glue is toxic and splint will chip under knife. Also OSB cannot be washed because it'll curve.

Hardest thing is to obtain decently sized piece of right wood. Pine or fir cannot be used because it is too soft and darkens in humidity. I had a log of 60-year-old apple wood, approximately 50cm in diameter, but as it dried out it cracked right through the center (as wood shrinks as it dries), and it happens with majority of fruit trees: I've tried apple, plum, cherry and pear. There is trick for preserving medium-sized branches, but big ones always crack.

To make a decent butcherblock you would need band saw and milling machine to make surfaces flat. Keep in mind that when making all wooden foodware, only cutting instruments must be used - no abrasive tools allowed. Picrelated is kuksa. Traditionally cut with only curved and straight knives.

are you eating from your desk?

>>1190
you could top it with epoxy, that'd be cool or top it with a veneer if you want it to look like wood. Polyurethane would be a sturdy finish. Or sheet metal, that will look nice.

nitrocelulose not polyurethane

Thanks!

What's the difference between these?

nitrocelulose is hard as fuaarrrk but nevermind that, i forgot that it's not that easy to get it i get it from my job. Polyurethane lacquer is acrylic lacquer, like nail polish but the one one you get for wood will be hard too. Not as hard as epoxy though.

I recently saw something about woodworking as well.
There was this guy who ditched most of his tools for a few chisels.
It had something to do with programming, but I can't remember what.

If he wants to to use OSB as butcher block, then yes, he will essentially be eating from it. Another one asked about desk and I wasn't replying to him.

I'm interested in early cave-men work and how tribes were formed in the early days. This channel shows how they (probably) did it

This is super cool to me. How it all started from nothing to where we all are today.
Damn.
