So I put together a modified Pirate Box and loaded it with hundreds of ebooks in my language (pictures of the GUI on the next post). It's running 24/7.

What kind of /cyb/ stuff can I add to make it more useful?

Also, offline sharing devices as /cyb/ tools thread.

Looks like it's not for hacker ebooks exclusively, why not change the name to Librería Abierta or LIBREría?
Anonymous uploading could be a good idea if you scan the files for malicious content. Remember to link to the piratebox site so people can roll their own, even maybe a torrent for all the content so anyone can replicate the library. A couple links to internet ebook download sites could be nice for further searching.

btw, de dónde sos?

Check /lit/, there's a pdf thread with lots of good stuff

Cool, I was thinking of implementing one in my university. The GUI looks great. Is that your design?
Some more questions
What is the range?
Where are you keeping it?
what are you running on?
Are you advertising it or just hoping people will be curious and connect to the network when they see it?
Do you allow uploads?

OP here.

>>18730
>Librería Abierta
>LIBREría
...

That's genius. May I use them?

>Anonymous uploading could be a good idea

I agree.

>btw, de dónde sos?

I'd rather not talk about that kind of stuff openly. I'm sorry.

>>18745
>Check /lit/, there's a pdf thread with lots of good stuff
Will do. Thanks.

>>18746
>The GUI looks great. Is that your design?
Aye.

>What is the range?

>what are you running on?
It's running on a cell phone, so the range is not great: about 20 meters on a good day (that's one chain, for the metric impaired). My plan is running a handful of these devices at the same time in different places. They are pretty inconspicuous.

>Where are you keeping it?

Unfortunately I'm keeping it in a very uninteresting an un/cyb/ place. I'm trying to fix that. Any ideas?

>just hoping people will be curious and connect to the network when they see it?

Aye. I think that'd be a schway user experience. Kinda like surfing the deep web, or however it's called nowdays.

>Do you allow uploads?

I'm going to. It sounds like a great idea.

Thanks for the schway feedback, guys.

You need to be careful with uploads, you must approve them first.
Otherwise someone might hit you with cp or 'terrorist materials', stuff that gets you attrested very suddenly.

>May I use them?
Of course, I actually stole Librería Abierta from the Open Library project.
https://openlibrary.org/

>I'd rather not talk about that kind of stuff openly. I'm sorry.

Todo bien.

>Unfortunately I'm keeping it in a very uninteresting an un/cyb/ place. I'm trying to fix that. Any ideas?

Using a router would boost the range and with some form of energy supply you could set it and forget about it.
Maybe get a solar panel that's able to keep the thing running, sneak to the top of a building and put it on the side so it reaches all places below. Do buildings have electricity outlets on the roof? You could also use a battery and recharge it or change it from time to time, if you place the device in a place you frequent.

this is interesting, the fact that it could be mobile. can you share the code somewhere? you say it is modified from the Pirate Box, but how?

>>

 No.18796

>>18781
You'd have to moderate it somehow. Judging that it's not going to be very active, it might not be a problem. Also, if it's just a dead drop running off an unseen outlet, you can deny responsibility or existence of the device

Do you think you could add range extenders to...extend the range. It would be cool if you could.

Not OP, but glad to confirm the existence of what seems to be fellow arglainons.

I was considering to buy a tp link MR3040 to build a piratebox. Is there any other router or hardware you would recommend instead?

That would be schway. I'm gonna do some research.

Not mine. You can get it here:

It would be schway to set up an in-browser game of computer-related puzzles that show a link to lainchan if you beat them.

>>18847
>tp link MR3040
That's the one they recommend on their site, and there are a couple more here https://piratebox.cc/openwrt:hardware but there aren't a lot of options, openwrt supports a fairly small group of routers and the piratebox also needs a USB port.
If your plan is to have it running at home you'd be better off using a computer and whatever router/s you have around, with a FTP server set up with a nice UI.

>arglainons

Yep, but I thought OP was español because of that "Acabad" in the second pic.
Sending a virtual abrazo.

>>18781
>you must approve them first.
OP's running it from an android phone, so restricting the file formats to the ones of ebooks and an having an antivirus automatically scan incoming files should be enough. A script that checks for duplicates would be good for keeping people from filling the storage with duplicates and using the right permission configs should keep lamers from deleting all the books.

Gonna try getting this installed on my Galaxy Ace running something like Android 2.3.3 troubleshooting this right now https://github.com/joschi70/AndroidPirateBox/issues/5
Thanks a bunch for introducing me to this. Gonna be fun seeing what I can cram into 2GB.

Huh, managed to get it working after installing BusyBox. No issues.
This is a really, really cool thing, such a fantastic idea.
Didn't realise it had a chat function and stuff. I hope the website offers some info on how you can edit the interface and stuff though. Would be nice to 'sticky' some text and have personalise it a bit to the area I live in.

The only thing is, I wonder how encouraging it is for people to actually connect to. I guess after you're connected and you try make any sort of web search it just sends you to the pirate.box page which is good, but is there a way I can change the name of the actual access point?

Also it's cool that at least with Firefox here, clicking on one of the uploaded files will just open it the browser if able. Even an mp3, it'll just start playing.

I'm gonna check out the GUI OP uploaded now.

If your thinking of doing this (Pirate Box) in the UK then here you now have a free and easy source of power!

That's usually done in the router's config, try entering 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in your browser's URL bar while you're connected to the box.

Thanks, I also found the options in the PirateBox app itself (I am not so familiar with this phone) and you can change a lot of stuff there.

I've included some downloads for i2p and the TOR browser bundle as well as some documentation pulled from the site for offline viewing to help people along. Seems like a good thing to try spread.

Cool interface OP. How much traffic have you seen on the piratebox?

>>18730
This gives me an idea. It would be simple to write a python script to monitor a directory for file changes, then upload new files to virustotal for analysis. Gonna put this together tonight for fun. For a piratebox, it would be a matter of taking output from the python script and writing it to the page for each upload so users can click a link to the appropriate report.

Not applicable in OP's case since he's using a cell phone, but good for linux-based pirateboxes.

I've tried to set up PirateBox on my Nexus 7 2012 running Paranoid Android 4.4.4 but upon trying to connect to it my phone and laptop just continually try to connect yet are unsuccessful.

Woops, on the 2012 device it would appear not. Damn. The screen is messed up (registers random presses on areas of the screen sometimes) so it would've been good to use it for something like this.
