No.16301
> The Chaos Communication Congress is the annual symposium and hacker party of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC). During four days between Christmas and New Years Eve, thousands of hackers, technology freaks, artists and utopians get together in Hamburg to communicate, learn from each others, and party together. We focus on topics such as information technology, digital security, making and breaking, and we engage in creative, sceptical discourse on the interaction between technology and society.
Because we already had a defcon and Chaos Communication Camp thread, I figured we should have this one as well.
How many are planning on attending?
Should we set up a lainchan assembly?

I will be there. Will get some lainchan stickers ready to give away.
If we are enough lainons there, an assembly would be denfitily very comfy :3

I have been thinking about attending, since it isn't far away,
and I am definitely in the target group for this event,
but I don't really know what happens there, and what one does when there.
Can anyone explain the appeal of this event to me?
>>
No.18570
>>18561There are two reasons I can think of:
First of all, you can socialize with a lot of very cool and very smart people. I think most actualy come for that.
Secondly, there is also a "professional", for the lack of a better word, to it. There're tons of great talks, workshops and other self-organized sessions about pretty much everything discussed here on lainchan.
>>
No.18573
>>18561I would mostly agree to
>>18570 but not at all. It's not like theres a big split between the heros and the normies. It's more about the community and doing cool stuff together. Without the work of the helpers, the so called angels, the event wouldn't work. I would suggest you to become an angel so you are getting in touch with other people and could work like you want - selling drinks, watching the IRC for questions about a talk and so on. I'm always going for two reasons: the talks on the one hand and meeting some friends of mine on the other.
>>
No.18574
>>18573I didn't want to imply a split between those two.
Thank you for clarifying it.

Previous attendees, what's the coolest thing you left CCC with?
An idea, a friend, some code, whatever.

>>18570>First of all, you can socialize with a lot of very cool and very smart people.I don't really know how to socialize randomly, so I question if there is a purpose in going (for me).
Talking to people randomly seems kind of weird.
And even if I manage to acquire the courage to speak to just anyone after quietly being alone, wandering around, drinking;
"hey you, do you like free software or haskell?", seems like a weird way to open a conversation.
>>
No.18592
>>18587Well, I like free software and haskell and we'd definetly meet at the lainchan meetup if you came.
I think it also might be worth soley for the talks, workshops and selforganized sessions, that's my assumption, though.
Also, if you do angel stuff, you'll get to talk with other people doing it together with you.

Get your tickets now.

There also are friend-tickets, which are cheaper, if you can't afford that.

>>16301i'll be there again.
there were only me and another guy confirmed coming last year (we didn't even meet). looks like this year there will be more people.
assembly would be too much, they have few space (and chairs) for assemblies already and it seems like too much for a handful randomly appearing people. Assemblies are for people who set up stuff and/or have people who stay at the assembly all the time.
but we could do a meetup in some discussion corner somewhere.
