A textpunk doesn't sit there waiting for information to be slowly fed to him drip at a time by the gogglebox. A textpunk is thirsty for knowledge and 100% focused - they read old school hacker textfile zines. They don't waste their time with lame imageboarders: instead they're doing crazy abstract brewing soykaf on /prog/ with thoughts and concepts twisted up so with many levels of irony that it becomes an art form.
Textpunks recognize and understand the true power of kopipe - how a well crafted piece of text can be so damn powerful that it alone can trigger thousands of replies with so much veracity within days. They see *through* things down into the core of what really counts, everything in the computer is built of text, ascii, strings of bits - They don't care about the latest 3D GUI environment fads. Look at how text has shaped humanity: The birth of writing systems was correlated with some of fastest advances of science and technology in early human history. Mass production of the Bible took power away from a few select monks and democratized paving the way for people to start thinking for themselves. Programming is text and it's the closest thing there is in the world to true wizardy and spell casting. Talking about real SICP-type programming here, not that modern garbage.

I'm planning on starting a shareblog for early underground/alternative videogames.
Most sites focusing on older games look at them for their retro aesthetic or mainstream influence, I want to introduce more interesting & radical games, like LSD: Dream Emulator, Lack of Love, Cosmology of Kyoto, etc.
And I want to provide the links to the roms conveniently right there like the old music blogspots used to. They aren't all abandonware, some might even be contemporary indie releases.
So I have 3 questions for lainchan:

>what's the ideal filehost to use?
I've looked at using blogspot, wordpress, tumblr and wikia but I don't think any are the right way to go - the interface is too clunky and they seem very sensitive to takedowns. I don't mind paying for a server host & domain but I don't want to actually pay for the data for user downloads. I'm thinking of mega for the filehost as its fast, easy to organize and backup. But is it still secure?
A note on what I'm looking for in the interface:
I'd like the site to exist more like a database than can be accessed for recommendations rather than a blog that people follow for updates - like most blogs are presented in order of newest to oldest, and the posts categorized by month and year. I'd rather have it categorized by system, developer, generation, genre, etc. similar to a recommendations wiki, discogs or erowid. Does anyone know existing examples of what I mean? Any suggestions on an API? -

A brain also does a lot of stuff other than developing abstract thoughts (controlling vital functions, handling sensorial data, etc).
Maybe a simplified version of a brain capable of having thoughts could actually be simulated in a current computer.
Maybe if the meaning of "consciousness" is formalized, an even simpler implementation can be made, which would be equivalent to a brain but extremely more efficient.
Maybe current machines can't simulate a brain in real time, but they actually can simulate it in slow motion (1 second of thought per week of computation).
Maybe you can map the evolution of another non-linear system into a thought (the motion of water in a very specific container, the evolution of the large scale structure of the universe, the phase of photons coming from a wall).
AI is the god we are looking for. It is the final answer.

seeing a similar thread on 4chan's /g/ I decided to start one here.
Just think for a moment. We use a somewhat decentralised network filled to brink with data... daily. Most of it is trash or another content that bears no significance to us. If you know the right way, though, you can siphon through it and hit a cluster of something very interesting (like The Do/k/ument or The Gentooman's Library). Imageboards are a specific place, because unlike another websites they have their unique, yet volatile and prone to change culture.
I'm a sick hoarder myself. Yes, sick, because it is a sickness indeed. I sometimes think of all that data that will be lost sometime and I won't be able to see it again. Everything changes. I'm poor though, so I can't afford a 5TB cluster to archive all music I like, some older games, chinese cartoons, valuable chunks of data (textfiles, whole book libraries, websites that can be taken down one day /remember Geocities?/ etc.), internet culture, old websites (as you can see, all of them start to look the same: http://www.novolume.co.uk/blog/all-websites-look-the-same) and other valuable content.
So... tell me about your hoarding. Do you hoard data? If you do, how and what do you keep? -

A lot of us have had enough with the corps. Companies just get bigger and bigger, with larger corporations gobbling up and merging with smaller companies. In addition, there's no question that the richest people can influence the government in ways that citizens can't, even as a voting population. There is no question that the United States is headed into a period of extraordinary economic inequality and a ruling oligarchy not unlike the gilded age, which will only be more evident when robots replace much of the workforce, leaving the means of production firmly in the hands of the people that own the technology.
Cyberpunks like feel pretty helpless. We might play video games or fondly anticipate a cyberpunk future, but deep down we know that this isn't what would be best for our children or the future of America. But what can we do? We're just wageslaves or NEETs.
Most of us spend plenty of time on the internet, but if we spent half that time AFK doing some sort of activism or action, we could make a difference. Whining about corps on an imageboard, watching 3 hours of anime daily, or spewing bull soykaf in an IRC can only do so much.

My uni has phone charging stations with micro USB + lightning adapters and a monitor displaying ads for stuff around campus + other sponsors. What kind of trouble might you be able brew with a Raspberry Pi hooked up to one of those and some sort of root privileges?
They don't get a lot of use by students who are right to not really trust the stations and consider them a waste of money, so collecting phone info with them doesn't sound like it'll yield much at all. The monitors themselves seem more promising since they could display whatever given the chance. -

How do you think religion could work in a cyberpunk society? As a potentially positive force I mean.
I think most traditional religions either favored raw, untapped nature or they favored a slower existence befitting the largely agrarian lives people might have led when these religions dominated their respective societies before the modern era. I wouldn't say that a more traditional religious expression is incompatible with modern technology, but there is this sense I get that the current technological state of things has either weakened religion or has created a kind of religious atmosphere that reflects that technology in some ways and this religious atmosphere seems to have a very radical or very bland or overly globalized quality to it which stands in contrast to some of the older expressions, which I would say had a more genuine spiritual character to them, even at their most rigid or aggressive.
At least this is my observation. The question I think is less whether or not religion would fade away in a cyberpunk world, because I think it would always find a way to survive in some way. Instead, I think the problem is how technology impacts religion and vice versa. -

As for me, yes I do sometimes go outside, just for the sake of "changing rooms". Sure finding wifi is a blessing in such cases, but most coffee shops give you wifi anyways. Other than that yes I am mostly sedimentary and survive on coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and unhealthy foods. -

Hie, I want to talk about ethics.
During my research, I've discover that the most easy way to be stealth and anonymous is to take the identity of someone else. By that, I mean passing through the infected computer of a victim, or to use the local network of someones else (more dangerous because you have to be near it).
This is the same for anonymous buy. I don't see any other way to be really anonymous but with the credit card of someone else.
I don't see any other way (notify me if there is other, but without being a pure computer genius, I don't see one).
That brings the question of ethic. If you want to resist to a dictatorship, oppression, how can you use these method? You'll be as bad as they are. And they're gonna certainly attack the one which you use the indentity just to hurt your morality, or just to make an example. -

As much as I want to be a recluse I have close normie friends who use Facebook and schedule events on Facebook. So I got an account for the sole purpose of private events and groups which I use through Tor at home.
I also use it on my phone though orweb with orbot. But the mobile website is impossible. So my plan is:
1. Get the app.
2. Firewall it with afwall
3. Block everything with CMs privacy guard feature
4. Bridge it with Orbot.
My concern is that CMs privacy guard will be insufficient and Facebook will still send personal data to its servers that I don't approve of. -

What would a society with 100% free speech be like? How would they manage, for example, death threats over e-mail or something similar? In theory, the person sending the mail is in their right of expressing themselves that way, but should that person be detained, or investigated, for threatening another person? Wouldn't that violate their free speech rights? On the other hand, if violent threats are not moderated, they could lead to becoming true. How would they handle situations like this? How would the society be like overall? No need to be realistic, just theoretically discuss this. Reality is soykaf and that of course isn't possible these days. -

How can we resist the growing, global police state architecture? Should we write new software - libresoftware to promote privacy? Lainons, we should start a project to promote privacy either promote how to be more secure with information or start projects to help people become private. We could start web rings, or gather together people to start a mesh net, or embark on a journey of teaching those willing to listen NetSec, IT, programming, and crypto. But how will we start, Lainons? Webrings? Mail lists? Meeting in person? -

I'm preparing to live homeless, lainons. Both out of choice and out of need - the "need" part isn't relevant right now, I'd like to focus on what I want: living independent of the grid.
Most of us know the basics of supporting yourself: trash picking, social engineering, use of local homeless resources, etc. But what about still maintaining access to technology?
My plan so far has been abandoning my smartphone for a burner kept inside of a radio-proof wallet or an Altoids tin or something (oldschool Nokias could fit very comfortably inside one). Then a Raspberry Pi with wi-fi dongle, TFT screen, and keyboard/mouse could act serviceably as a much cheaper laptop for programming, online purchases, etc. with the ability to function as more (a wardriver, for example, as has been pointed out in another thread). An oldschool MP3 player would be nice, too, since I've got several gigabytes that I still enjoy listening to.
Anyone here experience homelessness at one point or another? How did you do it? Are P.O. boxes a good choice for having things shipped to? How much information does one have to divulge to obtain one and are they heavily monitored? -

My very life as an unhealthy consumer citizen of the First World designates me as a walking human rights violation, and therefore my existence itself is likely the most wasteful and worthless thing on the face of this beautiful blue planet. My worth hit me, the crushing weight of my neglect for you collapsed my legs beneath me, and I just wept. How can any consumer here truly be free of sin? How can any person, of any race really be okay with the price somebody else has to pays for what we have here?

Today I looked at my hands and realized the blood they had on them. The past can never be scrubbed completely clean, but today my soul feels reborn and a great weight has been lifted. I feel like I have a purpose. I don't feel empty anymore.
