I think it's about time we have a proper music thread since I imagine most lainons listen to a variety of music genres and we could really use some music related conversation.

I would like to start by making some kind of sticky on how to get music in general for those that don't know;

– search the /mu/ archives https://archive.rebeccablacktech.com/mu/
* for example: if you're looking for Michael Pisaro - Continuum Unbound you would search for "Michael Pisaro http" or "Continuum mega", etc
– also be sure to check /mu/ share or request threads since they are abundant with things anons are eager to share;
* example: go to 4chan.org/mu/share || 4chan.org/mu/request from time to time and skim the threads
– register on and install soulseek
* if you can't find it, it's probably on soulseek or what.cd
– over the time memorize/bookmark various sites maintained by individuals that offer ddls for music releases;
* example(my fav): nodata.tv
– {optional} get into what.cd

Feel free to discuss music of any kind, music blogs, music trends or anything related to music here.

I made a small sampler of stuff I have in my music library while the computer was busy rendering some video (it still is). It is just stuff that might fit with the whole cyb thing. Or not at all, since it is not a well defined tag. No solid purpose at all, just sharing a few tracks.

I guess you could say metal, kinda mathcore type stuff, tech death metal. When I'm playing alone I come up with lots of just solo bass tapping and melodic stuff. But i love playing and coming up with all types of progressive style stuff really. Some big influences for me are scott fernandez, yvette young, and evan brewer. What about you?

The style I got from the metal influences I had when I started playing guitar in my teens.
My taste is a lot different and more open now, and the way I play guitar doesn't reflect that.
I think I should learn something other than minor scales.

if you want to get better at improvising you should learn your scales and get real familiar with them, same with the 7 scale modes. like currently all i know is natural aeolian minor, major, dorian, lydian, phygrian, and double harmonic scales. thats just very basic and nowhere near advanced theory or anything, id say it helps understand whats going on in music a LOT more though, picking out the scales in a song by ear, wanting to write something with a certain vibe and working around a specific scale that gives you that kind of sound. after a little push in the right direction like that youll be coming up with stuff and improvising all the time, just never force yourself! get comfortable playing though some of those scales, think about some songs and how they work, itll come to you in time.

this site is a nice and simple resource ive used: gosk.com/scales/

Not him, but thanks for the link. I sometimes use tuxguitar to see the scales in the graphical fretboard or keyboard, it has a big set of scales.
Playing with people is usually fun too.

Over the years I've grown to like everything that Squarepusher does. Originally a bass player, he got into drum n bass around the first half of the 90's and is not afraid to do experimental stuff with all the electronics he has. Active ever since, the dude is sometimes jazzier than most actual jazz artists. I'd recommend the album Ultravisitor in its entirety as an introduction, and also here's this cool video with a track off a recent album (try watching in chrome and something else at the same time for maximum fun)

Recently I've been into Lupe Fiasco's new album Tetsuo & Youth

The production is fantastic
There's nice little instrumental transitions throughout, with a sample of kids playing on a playground or smthng
It's Lupe, so you get over-the-head lyrics and muh politics, but he executes it well on certain songs

Best tracks: Madonna, Mural, Prisoner 1 & 2

I also listened to A$AP Rocky's new album
Good beats, and he has a decent flow, but not much on it to keep my interest
Way too long as well

I'm not especially well versed in jazz, but I know jazz flute is unfortunately somewhat uncommon. That said:

Try looking into Eric Dolphy, he's my favorite jazz flautist (disclaimer though, he more commonly plays bass clarinet and also plays alto sax). Live at the Five Spot, with Mingus at Cornell, Out to Lunch!, and Ole Coltrane are all good. (Ole Coltrane features Dolphy, but by a legal issue he's credited as George Lane.) If you like the Mingus album then look into the other recordings that Mingus and Dolphy did together, their Europe tour was Dolphy's last.

Coltrane only started playing flute later in his career (and when he did it was somewhat unusual), but I feel like I should mention My Favorite Things. There's no flute but if you liked Ole Coltrane you'll love it. It's where his style of long performances and experimentation (outside of just complex changes as in Giant Steps) began. If you like this style then I suggest anything Coltrane did after 1961-- he's recorded lots of excellent live performances and classic albums.

Outside of jazz you might want to look at choro, a Brazilian usually-instrumental genre which almost invariably is headed by flute. It's fairly jazz influenced, but falls a little too close to easy listening for my tastes sometimes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbHpU5y3_1g

Yeah, Eric Dolphy is fantastic. His style is very distinctive and he's definitely one of my favorite jazz composers. When it comes to Coltrane, "Expression" is probably my favorite flute-led album of his. The lineup with Pharoah Sanders and Jimmy Garrison works wonderfully and they all play really well together on that record.

I'm essentially clueless when it comes to choro, so I'll have to take a bit of a dive in there and see what I can find. I can easily see the style making for some pleasant listening if in the right hands.

Another one of my personal favorite flute records is "Nirvana" by The Bill Evans Trio with Herbie Mann. I wish Evans had played on more albums featuring the flute, his tender play style works so well with the instrument it's a shame that he only recorded a handful of albums with it in the band.

6 years after I'm still listening to it with the same fascination. Slow heartbeat-like rhythms, thirsty glitches, impious choirs and samples, unreal and mesmerizing atmosphere. The undead counterpart to Pop from Gas, which suck life out instead of pumping it in. Seriously, this must be one of those "perfect" album, where everything from production to general concept and execution is flawless.
