I don't remember much about it visually, but the story is about three childhood friends re-united by a family tragedy of one of them. It's a crime drama, and the tone of it is extremely bleak. One of Clint Eastwood's good dramas, don't watch this one if you want to feel happy. Basically everything in it is top notch.
Inside Llewyn Davis
A musical by the Coen brothers. It might not be a night movie per se, but it is very much about loneliness and inability to cope with world as it is. It's not exciting, but the dialogue is amazing, and the music, as long as you don't particularly hate folk music, is mesmerizing, with a lot of meaning in the lyrics. The main character is a pitiable man with some charm, who ultimately doesn't fit in the world as it is.
Let the Right One In (Swedish, not to be confused with american remake "Let Me In" which manages to subtly manages to turn the intent of the movie upside down, even going as far as having inverted colours in the credits.)
Essentially, a coming of age story about a boy who meets a girl who happens to also be a vampire. He has a lot going on in his life with his parent's split and bullying, so his newfound friend changes a lot about him. While it is a great simple movie on surface, it also has a second layer about the true nature of certain characters. It's dark in tone and in aesthetic, but it can also be very pleasant in it's own way when it comes to the interaction of the two main characters.
I avoided most of personal preferences when writing this, so if anyone would like a differently stylized suggestions, I can change how I do it. I am a bit of a cinephile, so I consider all of these to be great achievements in one way or another, and I think that they can be appreciated even by people who are not too interested in the subjects portrayed.
