Please recommend one film that you think is a must watch and a short description about it.

Mine is Short Term 12. Just heard about it today and streamed it. So. Many. Feels.

It's a great story about a home for troubled kids.

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters

Is definitely a must watch movie that almost never gets a mention.
It's directed by Paul Schrader which he considers

"the best film he has directed. "It's the one I'd stand by – as a screenwriter it's Taxi Driver, but as a director it's Mishima."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mishima:_A_Life_in_Four_Chapters

Anyone who enjoys this movie should check out Mishima's books too, which unfortunately some are untranslated.

Another thing that makes it great is the soundtrack by Philip glass.

Mine is Alatriste. It's an adventure film set in the early 1600s about a Spanish soldier/007 and his shenanigans during the Eighty Years War.

Maybe it's my favourite movie because I like history and war movies. It's the ideal combination of the two.

Also to contribute to the thread, The Deer Hunter for those who haven't seen it. Old classic.

On the surface it's a Vietnam war film but it's actually about friendship, growing up, what it means to be a man, etc.

File: 1435702984101.jpg (1.18 MB, 1922x3000, Nightcrawler Poster.jpg) ImgOps Exif iqdb

Gonna suggest some nightcore movies for you people. Note: I consider a nightcore movie a movie that partly or heavily relies on inflicting the same/similar feelings to those felt in the nighttime. Most of these are primarily set in low-lit areas or night.

Nightcrawler
Set mostly during night, a story about an unempathetic, mirroring man whose name is Lou. He strives to be the best at what he does, and he is willing to do anything it takes, even if other people's lives are at stake. The movie features commentary on the media industry and is mostly praised for the lead performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, who is awesome in pretty much everything.

Whiplash
Not as visually dark movie, still mostly set in dark areas, and most of the crucial scenes take place in low-light environments. This movie is about a young jazz drummer who wants to become "one of the greats" and is willing to put endless amounts of work into it and his teacher, whose main goal is to push everyone to their limits. Their personalities clash, making it a strong emotional ride. J.K. Simmons as the teacher is spectacular and the movie features one of the best third acts in recent movie history.

Prisoners
Visually-very cold. A man's daughter gets kidnapped and he is willing to go as far as it takes in order to get her back. The police aren't moving fast enough for him, so he tries to do it himself. A very dark movie, even when something seems to be moving forward, hope seems to be barely there. Might be a niche, but people here are likely to enjoy it.

Pan's Labyrinth
A fantasy movie, set during war time. A stepdaughter of a brutal military officer escapes into a dark fantasy world. Hard to explain it without giving too much away. It's in Spanish, but the monsters are extremely well created and it features, in my opinion, one of the most tense scenes in a fantasy movie, period.

Mystic River
I don't remember much about it visually, but the story is about three childhood friends re-united by a family tragedy of one of them. It's a crime drama, and the tone of it is extremely bleak. One of Clint Eastwood's good dramas, don't watch this one if you want to feel happy. Basically everything in it is top notch.

Inside Llewyn Davis
A musical by the Coen brothers. It might not be a night movie per se, but it is very much about loneliness and inability to cope with world as it is. It's not exciting, but the dialogue is amazing, and the music, as long as you don't particularly hate folk music, is mesmerizing, with a lot of meaning in the lyrics. The main character is a pitiable man with some charm, who ultimately doesn't fit in the world as it is.

Let the Right One In (Swedish, not to be confused with american remake "Let Me In" which manages to subtly manages to turn the intent of the movie upside down, even going as far as having inverted colours in the credits.)
Essentially, a coming of age story about a boy who meets a girl who happens to also be a vampire. He has a lot going on in his life with his parent's split and bullying, so his newfound friend changes a lot about him. While it is a great simple movie on surface, it also has a second layer about the true nature of certain characters. It's dark in tone and in aesthetic, but it can also be very pleasant in it's own way when it comes to the interaction of the two main characters.

I avoided most of personal preferences when writing this, so if anyone would like a differently stylized suggestions, I can change how I do it. I am a bit of a cinephile, so I consider all of these to be great achievements in one way or another, and I think that they can be appreciated even by people who are not too interested in the subjects portrayed.

>Waking Life (2001)

It's very dense and would be problematic to be short about it but basically it's about dreams about dreams, and I personally found this to be a must watch atleast once a year, again and again.

Lots of themes like lucid dreams, existentialism, morality, reincarnation, movies, etc.

Doctor Zhivago (1965)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Zhivago_%28film%29

Story follows the life of a young medical student in Russia under rule of the czar during WW 1, its descent towards the February Revolution, the following Civil War and later life under communism.
What sets this movie apart is the portrayal of how these times change him, his, society around him and his resulting struggles of trying to live according to his ideals.

If i had to pick a best film of all times, this would be it.

I hope you are aware that while Travis Bickle is the protagonist, you shouldn't feel similar to him. In the movie, it is shown that he is unable to cope with this world and doesn't understand it or fit in. I am not saying that you are a bad person for not relating to him (though, statistically, you are probably more likely to have mental issues), but rather that you shouldn't really be calling it a "must-watch" film for the fact that it is relatable.

I do think that it is one of the most essential movies to watch for its cultural presence, though.

Sidenote - does anyone here want a movie suggestion? I am somewhat good with them and if you want one, just tell me what kind of movie you want and I'll probably find something for you.

Some themes I like: lonely astronauts (gravity, moon, love), lucid dreams (inception, dreamscape), creepy and interesting protagonists (nightcrawler, the machinists) and /cyb/ (strange days).
I don't like cheesy action scenes (shootings and explosions for the sake of it) and predictable or over the roof plot twists (one guy in the crew is a traitor, guy meets girl then an hour of drama then guy sexes girl).

For now I'll watch waking life again because when I don't remember it being about dreams like that lainon above said.

Thanks you anon. Didn't watched three hour long movie without feeling bored since Seven Samurai. Amazing how REAL and truthful it manages to be. Right in the feeeeeeeeeel.

About Kurowasa, I would recommend watching either Rashomon or Seven Samurai, then Kagemusha and Ran. Hope is scarce in each one of those, but the two first really are top caliber if you want to watch something more than an excellent drama settled in medieval japan.

Damn, I've never heard of a lot of these movies
It's tough to pick just one, especially one that isn't a classic which I assume people have seen

I'll go with Johnny Mad Dog (2008)

It's about a group of child soldiers in the Liberia and their path to the capital to overthrow the government. Their leader is Johnny Mad Dog, though there's an adult who is their overall commander
Also a side-story about a girl and her family trying to flee the violence

Things I like about the movie are the sheer insanity of it
These are all young kids running around with AK47s - a lot of them are wearing ridiculous outfits, including one dude who fights in a wedding dress
The violence, the drug use...watching it without subtitles (they speak some English but an African form that's hard to understand) added to the madness

Some other interesting things are touched on: the ineffectiveness of the UN, the spoils of war (or lack thereof), and kids living in a very unforgiving, cruel environment

The Congress (2013). It's a movie of movies, everything big from the last century (Steamboat Willy, Dr Strangelove, Barry Lyndon, Alice in Wonderland, Titanic, I could go on) appears in one way or another in this epic movie. Don't even watch a fuarrrking trailer, you'll spoil the fun. It's really best if you haven't seen anything of it yet because it's a ride half the movie is an acid trip. HD recommended. If you haven't seen much from the last century, you won't see how incredibly detailed it is. It's not a "scary movie" where they only reference popular culture of the now (and make all sorts of lame jokes). Quite the opposite. It has feels and it has fantasy. IMHO it's the best non-asian movie since The Matrix. Based on the novel "The Futurological Congress" by sci-fi writer Stanislaw Lem (1921-2006). Starring Robin Wright (Princess Bride, Forrest Gump, White Oleander) as Robin Wright herself.

Although I don't think there's any film that people "must" watch, I'm gonna cheat a bit and recommend two: a new film, and an old film.

The new film is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (David Fincher, 2011). The plot is about a hacker and an investigative journalist who team up to solve a decades old mystery. TGWTDT is populist trash elevated to art through craftsmanship. Fincher's direction is perfection, taking a detached, non-judgemental, approach to the material that unexpectedly gives the film a great warmth and humanity. It's an art film disguised as a thriller/mystery film and highly watchable. Comes with a gorgeous soundtrack, moody cinematography, a comfy setting, and feels.

The old film is Pickpocket (Robert Bresson, 1959). Pickpocket channels both Dostoyevsky and Camus in a character study of a young man who turns to crime. Bresson takes an act that is seemingly mundane - pickpocketing - and constructs extraordinary and unforgettable sequences out of it, all in a taut 75 minutes of film. If only computer hacking could be made so visually thrilling. Literally one of the best films ever made.
