Does anyone know of any good documentaries about cyberpunk in the modern world? Not necessarily intentionally so; I suddenly desired a documentary about underground hardware trade in China, which would be very cyberpunk but not *intentionally* cyberpunk, if that makes any sense.

What are some good documentaries you've seen that triggered your cyberpunk senses?

Some time ago I saw a video about the Egyptian protests against their gov and - in a different note - how the Chinese economy led to the existence of unhabitated cities in the middle of nowhere full of half-built buildings.
It was one of the VICE series by the BBC or the CBS or someting, I looked it up, read that it's biased and didn't see any more vids, but I liked that one.

There are a couple documentaries about drones too.

I don know if we can embed video so here is a link https://vimeo.com/111346364 but The Century Of The Self by Adam Curtis

>The Century of the Self is a 2002 British television documentary series by Adam Curtis. It focuses on how the work of Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, and Edward Bernays influenced the way corporations and governments have analyzed, dealt with, and controlled people.

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Century_of_the_Self

>"This series is about how those in power have used Freud's theories to try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy." —Adam Curtis' introduction to the first episode.

"The tower of David" in Caracas, Valenzuela was supposed to be a skyscraper on the main banking street of the capital that would house a powerful bank. However, midway through it's completion the economy in Valenzuela had a crash. For almost 10 years, the massive structure stood unfinished and unused.

But the people became sick of it sitting there and doing nothing. So they began to move in. First the bottom levels, but eventually almost all the levels of the towering behemoth became filled with people living and working in the tower.

The tower has very little infrastructure, especially in the upper levels but the residents are always trying to do whatever they can to improve it.

Regardless, it does have some problems with criminality and drugs. It's all very Megablocks from the setting of Judge Dredd.

The government/authorities are now trying to move people out of the tower, citing that's it's too dangerous to leave people in a skyscraper that's barely move that the skeleton of a finished product. However, many have no where else to go and don't wish to leave.

I liked it. The director could've been more subtle when approaching the victims though. He might've gotten more interesting responses if he didn't 'offend them' so soon.

Too bad this flick didn't concentrate more on the relationship between Macy - artist/hippies - computer history. Does anyone have any recommendations what to watch or read in that area?

Why is the cyberpunk future/reality so...sad in the end?
If you look at media and art from the '80s, there was this "looking towards the future" as something bright and bountiful on the horizon
Now in the 21st century, we're here, and just how great is it?
Technology has made our lives more convenient, but it comes at cost of our social lives and soon our jobs
We're advancing so fast. I'm scared tech/robots/AI will eclipse us

I finished SEL this past month and so many things about that show are unsettling, especially how ahead of its time and relevant it is
I just hope there is a real Lain/God of the Internet out there

'All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace' is another good one by Curtis. The context and people interviewed ties in with 'The Net'. see: >>585

Also 'The Tube' (2009) covers this history and effects of TV, it's very educational, similar journalistic style as 'The Net'.

I love stuff like this. It gives me some good Kowloon-vibes.

I also love how, while most towns, in order to maintain a false image of cleanliness and goodness, keep their slums and dirty poor people on the outskirts, these people are in the tallest building of the town, looming over all of the main streets and city buildings, acting as the blemish on the town's almost-perfect face. They are, in an almost literal way, the elephant in the room. People touring the town might ask what that huge building is only to be shushed down aggressively for acknowledging its existence.
