Title says it all. What are your favorite programming IRC channels, lainons?
>>

 No.10074

I honestly dispise irc, giant circle jerks and user worship centers.

From that either you go to the wrong IRCs or you simply hate society in general, though somehow I get the feeling there's more to the story.

I'd actually go with disliking irc as well.

I hate soykaf where I have to use a name.

I grew out of handles and names when I was 17.

Most IRC channels really are just mini personality cults and circlejerks.

So you hate society in general? You're expected to have a name there.

>I grew out of handles and names when I was 17.

Edgy, but let's be honest, using a name is not a childish thing.

>Most IRC channels really are just mini personality cults and circlejerks.

You must visit the wrong channels. Most IRCs are no worse for this than most IRL groups of friends.

#Haskell is super nice to total newbies, yet you can regularly talk to people involved with the GHC itself.

Thanks. Quick question: Which network is it on,freenode? Also do you know of any channels similar to Reddit's CSCareer Questions subreddit

>>

#learnprog is good
#linux is okay

>>

 No.10089

#emacs is fun
I used to go in #lainchan, but that was by January, then I had no time to use the intarnetz whatsoever for 6 months and when I got back it was really crowded and I just don't feel comfortable enough in there anymore.
And yes there is some circlejerking going on in irc channels, but that's a consequence of, yes, having a name and being a regular. But that's not really important, I usuallly manage to get some decent conversation in there and, at the end, I use irc more than the web lately. The web bores me to death these days, lainchan is the only thing I visit actually

Oooook, then. Or you can actually communicate with people, instead of trying to seem "cool." Only really makes sense if you're a skiddie and literally nothing else, trying so hard to be 1337 that you don't want to converse. There are some pretty cool people.

>>10072
suckless and morpheus are pretty alright. ozcoin used to be awesome, ckolivas hung out there, as well as a couple other pretty major bitcoin people, and they were happy to help when the need arose. I think since ozcoin died it's pretty much dead, although people stayed around for months.

IRC is a very useful tool that can be used to gather information from across the board. IRC isn't only for rampant circlejerks. That's what we have imageboards for!
>>10089
Lainchan IRC is dead if I recall correctly. There are lots of people in there but nobody ever says anything.

#lisp is my favorite

I learned a lot from asking questions about things that make me curious. An example being one time a few people helped fix my mental model on Continuation Passing Style when I was learning about it. Occasionally I try to help with questions/problems others have when it's within my ability because it's fun helping and I usually learn something new along the way. Many times there is discussion outside of my knowledge since Common Lisp is used by a lot of the very experienced programmers, but it can still be interesting if I'm able to understand some parts.

I feel that one can benefit from an IRC channel centered on a specific topic of which one has a strong interest and desire to learn about. Answering questions and helping others understand more about the topic can help one's knowledge too. I like programming in Common Lisp so #lisp is my favorite.

I'm quite enamoured of #lainchan tbqh fam. Good for yarns and bantz, but also programming discussion. Every time I've posted code for comment someone has made very helpful and intelligent remarks.

So I never really got into IRC

How do I start using it? Obv. I can download a client and start messing around, but how do I not make an ass of myself from not knowing the etiquette / how to accomplish basic tasks?

>how do I not make an ass of myself from not knowing the etiquette
Any channel worth soykaf will treat you well as long as you behave like a decent human being.

>how to accomplish basic tasks

IRC is easy. Just read some random guide on the most useful commands and you're good to go.

>>

Can someone tell me how I would begin to participate in IRC (not just on Lainchan)? I have a client, I know how it all works but I don't understand how communities function on them.

> I don't understand how communities function on them
There's two forms I've seen so far.

Social hangouts or circlejerks, like #lainchan. Pretty much the same as hanging out with friends IRL.

Channels centered around a project, like #haskell or #nixos. They'll talk about the development of the project and answer your questions.

>>

>>11175 That makes sense, thanks. Most IRC channels I've gone on before have just been empty with hundreds of idle users, is this normal?

>>

 No.11180

>>11176
Yep, though I have no explanation for this.

>>

 No.11187

>>11180
That's perfectly normal.
Most people have their IRC clients open while doing other stuff or even use bouncers.
You'll usualy get a reply if you start a conversation, though.
